SACRAMENTO – Gov. Gavin Newsom on Tuesday signed legislation from Sen. Bill Dodd, D-Napa, that will help ensure the conservation of wildlife habitats in California through public-private partnerships with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

“Collaboration is the key to maintaining sustainable hunting lands in California,” said Sen. Dodd, who co-chairs the Legislature’s Outdoor Sporting Caucus. “Many in the outdoor sporting community are the most conservation-minded because they want to pass on to future generations the opportunities they have had. Thanks to Gov. Newsom for signing this new law, which will help ensure the continued conservation of these wild habitats.”

In 2010, the Legislature established the Big Game Management Account, funded by hunting license fees, to pay for research and habitat restoration to benefit big-game species. Senate Bill 370 clarifies the law to allow public and private entities, including nonprofit organizations and federally recognized tribes, to continue their valuable habitat work.

Doing so is critical to achieving program objectives including contracting for aerial surveys and captures of wild sheep, as well as important research at institutions like UC Davis and Humboldt State University.

SB 370 is sponsored by the California Deer Association and the California chapter of the Wild Sheep Foundation and is supported by more than a dozen outdoor sporting organizations. It was approved with overwhelming support of both the Assembly and Senate before being sent to the governor’s desk for a signature.

Dodd represents the Third Senate District, which includes all or portions of Napa, Solano, Yolo, Sonoma, Contra Costa and Sacramento counties.

In “Powerlands,” Tso investigates displacement of Indigenous people and devastation of the environment caused by the same fossil fuel and extractive corporations that have exploited the land where she was born. On this personal and political journey she learns from Indigenous activists across three continents.

As this film exposes a range of corporate abuses and Indigenous resistance in Colombia, Mexico, the Philippines and Navajo Nation, the connections are clear: in every corner of the earth, Indigenous people are being pushed off their land by corporate extractive industries, working with state forces.

The resistance also looks similar across the planet: a combination of community steadfastness, legal struggles, political lobbying, and direct action, while also working on the ground to physically maintain land and culture.

Tso will be on hand to introduce each showing and will be available for a question and answer session after the film credits.

LAKEPORT, Calif. — The city of Lakeport’s Measure Z Advisory Committee will meet on Wednesday, July 20.

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. — The California Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Lake County Sheriff's Activities League are partnering to offer an archery activity to students ages 8 years to 18 years.

The event will be held on Saturday, Aug. 6, at the firing range on Highlands Spring Dam Road from 8 to 11 a.m., with a hotdog feed will be provided for student participants at 11 a.m.

Those who are 17 and 18 years old must still be in high school to participate.

All equipment is provided and there is no charge to families.

Organizers ask parents of children from 8 to 12 to stay for the activity.

To register, call Lake County Sheriff's Activities League Board Members Terry Norton at 707-263-0454. Norton will take your children's names, ages and contact information for future notifications as needed.

Each student participant must bring an already completed and signed release and waiver form to the event. If you have already filled one out in 2022 for a different LCSAL activity (boxing kayaking or Jr. Giants), let Norton know.

If you sign your child up for this activity and are unable to make the date, let Norton know. The groups need to keep an accurate head count of participants.
