LAKEPORT, Calif. – Sons In Retirement held their monthly meeting in February at the Konocti Visa Casino.

Because it was held on Valentine’s Day their sweethearts were treated to lunch.

The ladies were welcome by the Ed Brooks, the Big Sir.

In addition Jim Carey supplied the music and invited couples to get up and dance. He also distributed this year’s golf schedule.

The special speaker was Bob Staib, the director of Region 4. Staib entertained the SIRs with his list of the five most important things about SIRs:

1. Gets the old guy out of the house.
2. Keeps the old guys out of trouble.
3. Helps the old guys make new acquaintances.
4. Lowers the old guy’s golf handicap.
5. Adds five years to an old guy’s life.

Bob Specht gave a brief description of the upcoming travel events that included a bus trip to the Jackson Theater in Santa Rosa to see “In the Mood” on Feb. 22, a trip to Reno to see the “Tribute to Johnny Cash” (March 5-7), and a bus trip to visit the new home of the Exploratorium on March 19.

Sons In Retirement is a social organization for men of retirement age who are pursuing the goal of enjoying their later years.  It has 142 branches with 18,000 members throughout the state. Branch 168 holds a Luncheon on the second Friday of each month at the Conference room at Konocti Vista Casino.

LAKEPORT, Calif. – Make a difference – the Lakeport Senior Activity Center needs volunteers.

Volunteers are needed to plan and carry out fundraising events for the Lakeport Senior Activity Center.  

These events include parties, dances, dinners, barbecues or anything else that can help raise funds.  

The center needs anyone with an interest in, or a flair for, computer research, construction, decorations and decorating, promotion, serving, organization skills, Meals on Wheels route delivery and all things in between.

These fundraisers are to help with the Meals On Wheels Program so no senior, who may need help, will go hungry.

The center's next big event is its second annual Hot August Nites Dinner/Dance for all ages. Come and have some fun and make it the big success they know it will be.

"If you want to work with a group of fun-loving, hard-working folks, volunteering for this event is absolutely the right project for you," said center Director Jonathan Crooks.

FINLEY, Calif. – The Widowed Persons of Lake County group is having a luncheon on Tuesday, April 1.

The group will gather at 11:30 a.m. at Angel's Rock House restaurant, 1967 Big Valley Road in Finley.

All widows and widowers are welcome.

NORTH COAST, Calif. – Caltrans reports that the following road projects will be taking place around the North Coast during the coming week.

Included are Mendocino County projects that may impact Lake County commuters.

LAKE COUNTY

There is no major roadwork scheduled for Lake County from Friday, March 14, through Thursday, March 20.

MENDOCINO COUNTY

Highway 1

– Replacement of the Greenwood Creek Bridge will continue. One-way traffic control with a temporary signal will be in effect 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays.

– Guardrail repairs at various locations from Philo-Greenwood Road to Little River Airport Road will continue. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays.

– Guardrail repairs at various locations from Blue Slide Gulch to Hillcrest Terrace will continue. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays.

– Replacement of a culvert with a bridge at Dunn Creek will continue. One-way traffic control with a temporary signal will be in effect 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays.

Highway 20

– Bridge repairs at the East Fork Russian River Bridge will continue. Nighttime work hours are 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., Sunday evening through Friday morning. One way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays.

Highway 101

– Caltrans will perform slide repairs near the Korean War Veterans Memorial Bridge (near Frog Woman Rock). Northbound traffic will be restricted to one lane 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Motorists may experience minor traffic slowdowns.

The Caltrans Traffic Operations Office has reviewed each project and determined that individual project delays are expected to be less than the statewide policy maximum of 30 minutes, unless noted otherwise above.

CLEARLAKE, Calif. – A fundraiser yard sale for a high school drama class will take place on Saturday, April 12.

The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Tatonka Trading, 14240 Lakeshore Drive in Clearlake.

A four-member team is putting on the fundraiser as a class project, with all of the proceeds will be donated to Cindy Radford's Middletown High School drama class for new equipment.

LAKEPORT – K. C. Patrick will speak at the next meeting of the Lake County Historical Society on Sunday, March 23.

The meeting will take place at 1:30 p.m. in the Lakeport Historic Courthouse Museum, 255 N. Main St.

Patrick, who wrote “The Pomo of Lake County” from Arcadia Publishing, will present a program about the Pomos and the history of the Lake County Historical Society.

She graduated from Clear Lake Union High School in 1957 and worked as a journalist before returning to Lake County.

The Lake County Historical Society invites the public to this free program and to learn more about the society which will celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2015.
