COBB, Calif. – The Friends of Boggs Mountain will hold its first annual "Dogs at Boggs" event for canines and their companions on Saturday, May 4, from 10 a.m. to noon at Boggs Mountain Demonstration State Forest.

Leashed, friendly dogs and their companions are welcome.

American Kennel Club member Leslie Puppo will provide 30 minutes of dog-handling tips specifically for forest visitors.

Following the lesson, participants will enjoy a fun exploration of the 1.3-mile interpretive trail.

No leaf will remain unsniffed.

Canine participants will receive the coveted “I’m a Boggs Dog” button and a bag of treats. Refreshments will be provided for humans.

This free event is sponsored by the Friends of Boggs Mountain and Evanger's Dog & Cat Food Company.

KELSEYVILLE, Calif. – Kelseyville Presbyterian Church is hosting a fiesta dinner fundraiser to be held Saturday, May 4.

It will take place from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the church, located at Third and Church streets, behind Westamerica Bank in Kelseyville.
 
Enchilada casserole tacos, rice and beans will be prepared and served by a staff of incredible cooks.
 
Prices are $10 for adults and kids under 10 may eat for just $5. Take out dinners will be available as well.

All proceeds from the dinner benefit KPC deacons’ local community outreach programs.

CLEARLAKE OAKS, Calif. – The Lake County Stonewall Democratic Club will host its monthly potluck and meeting on Monday, April 22.

The meeting will take place in the Clearlake Oaks United Methodist Church Social Hall, 12487 Plaza Drive.

The potluck begins at 6:30 p.m., with the meeting commencing at 7 p.m.

This meeting is open to the public and the community is encouraged to attend.

The guest speaker this month will be Ken Young, M.S.W., social worker with Lake County Hospice Services.

LAKEPORT, Calif. – More than 200 people of all ages participated in the Advocacy Walk for Child Abuse Awareness Month on Saturday, April 13.

Starting and ending at Library Park in Lakeport, the walk was one of several activities held that day to commemorate Lake County’s support for keeping children safe.   

A flag was raised on the mast-style flagpole in Library Park to honor children who have been victims of child abuse. The flag will fly there for one month.  

A Children’s Festival in the park followed the walk.

Many local agencies offered fun activities for children as well as information to keep children and families safe and healthy.  

The events were sponsored by the Lake County Children’s Council and First 5 Lake County with the help of several other Lake County organizations and agencies that provide support for children and their families.

LAKEPORT, Calif. – The Lake County Fair Board will meet on Monday, April 22.

The meeting will begin at 4:45 p.m. at the administration office at the Lake County Fairgrounds, 401 Martin St., Lakeport.

Action items include the blue ribbon dinner and a consider of the waiver of the state rules for Fair Board Director Carol Brandt to participate in the open horse show.

The board also will discuss the 2013 Spring Fair times, admission prices, carnival and grandstand entertainment.

Fair board directors include President Janeane Bogner, Vice President Marcia Chauvin, Sham Cochrane, Annette Hopkins, Meyo Marrufo, Jerry McQueen, Carol Brandt, Dr. Paul Marchand and Doug Rhoades.

LOWER LAKE, Calif. – The Redbud Audubon Society will hold its monthly program on Thursday, April 18.

The program will begin at 7 p.m. at the Lower Lake School House Museum, 16435 Morgan Valley Road.

Guest speaker will be ornithologist Adam Hutchins whose topic will be “Raptors on the Move.”

“Hutchins is definitely a fan of raptors. He has watched, counted, trapped, banded, tracked, climbed into nests, sampled, rescued and photographed raptors for over a decade,” said Redbud Audubon President Marilyn Waits.

His favorite hat was stolen from his head by a red-tail hawk, and he has been christened by a condor.

Through his extensive experience with birds of prey he met his wife, fellow raptor-phile Alison Cebula, atop a mountain during a hawk watch.

Hutchins currently lives on the Mendocino Coast and is a board member of the Mendocino Coast Audubon chapter, as well as program chair.

He developed an interest in birding while attending Evergreen State College in Washington, and he then pursued a career in ornithological studies and monitoring after graduation.

His fieldwork has included projects with hummingbirds, forest passerines, and numerous birds of prey. He is a big fan of bats and fish too.

Hutchins came to the Mendocino Coast from the arid lands of the Great Basin and the Colorado Plateau.

Currently, besides working for California State Parks, he is taking advantage of his time living near the Ten Mile River to work on his shorebird, gull and pelagic identification skills.

The public is encouraged to attend this interesting program.
