KELSEYVILLE, Calif. — As Veterans Day approaches, the Kelseyville community is gearing up for a morning filled with patriotism, delectable pancakes and unwavering support for our dedicated veterans.

Blue Heron 4-H Club proudly presents its annual Veterans Day pancake breakfast on Monday, Nov. 11, from 8 to 11 a.m., at the Saw Shop Public House, 3825 Main St., Kelseyville.

The cost is $14 for homemade pancakes, tasty eggs and savory thick slabs of bacon, along with orange juice and coffee.

The dedicated members of Blue Heron 4-H Club, renowned for their commitment to community service, will act as both hosts and servers for this special occasion.

All proceeds from the event will be dedicated to supporting Wreaths Across America, a cherished organization that honors veterans resting at the Kelseyville Cemetery.

Congressman Mike Thompson presented David Woodward of Lakeport a certificate honoring him as the Land Trust's supporter of the year; Val Nixon, LCLT President, and board member, Roberta Lyons, presented a plaque to David for all of the work he has done monitoring birds and other wildlife at the land trust's Kuulanapo Preserve. LAKE COUNTY, Calif. — The Lake County Land Trust’s annual dinner on Saturday, Oct. 26, at the Boatique Winery brought together friends and supporters to enjoy an evening of fellowship and education with the theme of “Conserving Nature Together.”

Congressman Mike Thompson presented a Congressional certificate of recognition to the organization’s Supporter of the Year, David Woodward of Lakeport.

Sharron Zoller, past state president of California Women for Agriculture and member of the Lake County Chapter of CWA, delivered an educational talk on agriculture and its importance to maintaining open space and preventing urban sprawl, noting the “Shared Values of California’s Agriculture and Land Conservation.”

President of the Land Trust, Val Nixon, updated the audience of over 160 supporters on the latest LCLT news, including the approval of several grants and an important donation from The AES Corp.

LCLT vice president Merry Jo Velasquez discussed a recent creek restoration grant awarded to the Land Trust that will help restore an important hitch migration area of Manning Creek near Lakeport.

Nixon introduced the AES Clean Energy representative, Michael Huhyn, who had traveled from Colorado to attend the dinner. AES recently donated $20,000 to the LCLT to complete the painting of water tanks on Rabbit Hill in Middletown and to upgrade the Rodman Nature Center near Upper Lake.

The appetizers and buffer dinner featuring local products was prepared by Rosey Cooks Catering; Paul Kemp arranged the sound system for the event. The silent auction brought some enthusiastic bidders with Boatique Winery wines enjoyed by the crowd.

Congressman Mike Thompson, when presenting the Congressional certificate to Woodward, lauded the Land Trust for its many accomplishments, saying he was always impressed with how every time he attended a Land Trust event he heard about even more projects that were underway or completed in Lake County.

The LCLT is a charitable nonprofit organization; contributions are tax deductible.

MENDOCINO NATIONAL FOREST, Calif. — Cutting a holiday tree is a special tradition to share with family and friends, and it also helps maintain a healthy forest.

Christmas tree permits are a unique opportunity for citizens to help thin densely populated stands of small-diameter trees.

The Mendocino National Forest will begin selling Christmas tree permits online at Recreation.gov on Monday, Nov. 4.

To purchase a Christmas tree permit, users can visit Recreation.gov and search by forest name or use the interactive map to explore locations. Visitors will need to create or log in to a Recreation.gov account to review guidelines and purchase a permit.

A permit must be purchased, limited to one per household. On Recreation.gov, visitors have the option to purchase up to three trees. The cost for 2024 is $10 per tree, and with a $2.50 transaction fee. The number of permits is limited and will be issued on a first-come, first-served basis. Permits are good through Dec. 31, 2024.

Persons must be at least 18 years old to purchase the permit. All Christmas tree permit sales are final; no refunds will be made. Christmas tree cutting will be allowed only in specific areas in the Mendocino National Forest.

When heading out to the forest to cut a Christmas tree, officials remind visitors to follow these important tips for a safe and enjoyable experience:

• Plan your trip and check the weather forecast.
• Bring plenty of warm clothes, water, food, tire chains, shovel, a saw or ax to cut your tree and a tarp and rope to bring it home.
• Keep vehicles on designated roads and be prepared for changing weather and road conditions.
• Be aware of safety hazards when traveling through a burned area.
• Remember cell phone service may be unavailable, so carry emergency equipment in vehicles.
• Cut the tree early in the season before favorite cutting areas can’t be reached because of snow.
• Make sure you are cutting a tree on the Mendocino National Forest within the designated Christmas tree cutting area and not on other federal, state or private lands.
• Cut the tree as close as possible to the ground and leave as short a stump as possible.
• Print your permit and make sure it is visible on your vehicle dashboard. If you purchase a permit in-person at one of our offices or vendors, you will receive a tag that needs to be tied to your tree when you transport it home.

Fourth graders who participate in the Every Kid Outdoors program are eligible for a free Christmas tree permit. The Every Kid Outdoors program introduces fourth graders to public lands in their own backyards and beyond.

To receive a free permit, students or their teachers can register for passes online at https://everykidoutdoors.gov/pass.htm. Parents and guardians will need to bring the pass for in-person purchases or enter the voucher or pass number for online purchases.

Permits can be also purchased by mail or in person at the Willows, Stonyford, Upper Lake and Covelo Ranger Stations. If purchasing in person, individuals can purchase one permit per household and one tree per permit.

Several local vendors will also be selling Christmas tree permits. For a list of locations selling permits, please visit the forest website at https://bit.ly/Mendo-Christmas.

Before making a trip to purchase a permit in person, please call the forest office or vendor ahead of time to check hours and permit availability.

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. — The Lake County Air Quality Management District reported that, as of Oct.30, the annual Lake County burn ban for 2024 is still in effect.

Cal Fire has lifted its burn permit suspension, however, Lake County is still in peak fire season.

This lifting of Cal Fire’s burn permit suspension allows limited exemption burns to occur before the lifting of the burn ban.

The Lake County burn ban is still in effect for general open burning.

The burn ban includes all open waste burning, unless an exemption burn permit has been issued.

Any open burning during the burn ban without an exemption permit may be subject to citation, fines and the cost of the fire agency response to extinguish the fire.

Burn restrictions will remain in effect until Cal Fire declares an end to fire season.

Updates will be available at www.lcaqmd.net.
