UPPER LAKE, Calif. – The next Redwood Empire Civil War Roundtable will be this coming Tuesday, Aug. 2, at 6:15 p.m. at the Tallman Hotel in historic Upper Lake.

The main presenter will be Dr. Bill Cornelison, a former Lake County superintendent of schools and a professor of history at Yuba College.

Dr. Cornelison will review the life of John C. Fremont, known to history as “The Great Pathfinder.”

Fremont had an extensive historical resume, including helping secure California from Mexico, being the first senator from California, the Republican Party's first candidate for president and controversial Civil War general.

After the presentation, Dr. Cornelison will lead a round table discussion on the merits and faults of Fremont's Civil War decisions.

Lisa Deppe will open the roundtable with a brief presentation on the Battle of Wilson's Creek where Gen. Nathaniel Lyon was killed by a mixed army of southern soldiers and Cherokees.

Eleven years earlier it was the same Lyon who came to Lake County and committed the Bloody Island atrocity, killing upwards of 300 Pomo men, women and children.

The Redwood Empire Civil War Roundtable meets once a month and attempts to review what happened that month 150 years ago during the Civil War.

Admission is free and everyone is welcome.

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – The new Lake County Food Guide has been released.

The Food Guide is a means to encourage all residents to buy local first, as part of a countywide campaign to “Eat Fresh – Buy Lake County Grown.”

Eating widely from the array of fresh produce available from local growers contributes to individual health as well as the health of our economy.

Food is a basic essential of life, the more local food we produce and consume the more we bolster our health, local food availability and food security.

The overarching goal is to increase production and consumption of specialty crops in our community.

Lake County’s specialty crops include fruit, vegetables and tree nuts.

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) urges customers to securely tie a weight to all metallic balloons containing helium to prevent them from floating away.

Metallic balloons that contact overhead power lines can disrupt electric service to an entire neighborhood, cause significant property damage and potentially result in serious personal injuries.

Last weekend, a significant power outage occurred in Berkeley after metallic balloons made contact with power lines, the company reported.

In 2010, metallic balloons that drifted into PG&E power lines caused more than 250 outages, affecting electric service to nearly 130,000 PG&E customers throughout Northern and Central California.

In order to significantly reduce such outages, PG&E reminds customers to follow these important safety tips for metallic balloons:

  • “Look Up and Live!" Use caution and avoid celebrating with metallic balloons near overhead electric lines.

  • Make sure helium-filled metallic balloons are securely tied to a weight that is heavy enough to prevent them from floating away. Never remove the weight.

  • When possible, keep metallic balloons indoors. Never release them outside.

  • Do not bundle metallic balloons together.

  • Never attempt to retrieve any type of balloon, kite or toy that becomes caught in a power line. Leave it alone and immediately call PG&E at 1-800-743-5000 to report the problem.

  • Never go near a power line that has fallen to the ground or is dangling in the air. Always assume downed electric lines are live. Stay far away, keep others away and immediately call 911 to alert the police and fire departments.
