LAKEPORT, Calif. – Goodwill Industries of the Redwood Empire will hold an electronic waste and donation drive on Saturday, Jan. 8.

The event will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the parking lot at Bruno's Shop Smart, 355 Lakeport Blvd. in Lakeport.

The focus of the e-waste and donation drive is to eliminate electronic waste in the landfill and provide job training for people with disabilities or other barriers to employment.

E-waste is defined as electronic equipment at the end of its useful life, and includes computers, monitors, printers and other peripherals, televisions and cellular telephones.

While computers contain four hazardous materials – lead, mercury, arsenic and cadmium – computer monitors can contain up to 5 pounds of lead and other hazardous materials.

In order to maintain the integrity of personal information, Goodwill does not resell computers and receives certification that all computer hard-drives are shredded.

Goodwill is licensed as an electronic waste collector by the state of California and works with only state-licensed recyclers that dismantle and recycle materials in the United States.

In addition to this e-waste collection event, residents can donate their e-waste year-round at any of Goodwill's stores or attended donation centers.

Locations are listed in the telephone director, at www.gire.com or can be located by calling 707-525-0550.

In addition to e-waste, Goodwill is seeking donations of clothing, small appliances, household items and books in good condition.

Goodwill is a 501c3 charitable donation.

KELSEYVILLE, Calif. – Local children have pitched in this year to create a Merry Christmas for less fortunate children.

The Riviera Elementary School Student Council collected Toys for Toys this year under the guidance of Lori Mahar.

The toy collection effort was part of the community service project the students do every year.

MIDDLETOWN, Calif. – The public is invited to a free presentation by longtime healthy eating advocates, Hope and Cogen Bohanec, who will share the essential reasons for living a vegan lifestyle: to protect the earth, preserve human health and prevent animal suffering.

“Living and Loving a Life of Compassion” will be presented at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 2, at the Seventh-Day Adventist School, 21640 Highway 29 South, Middletown.

With catastrophic climate change becoming more a reality each day, an epidemic of chronic degenerative diseases and obesity, and the exposure of horrible cruelty in animal agriculture, now is the time to make a New Year’s Resolution for positive change in your life and your diet.

The Bohanecs have been active in animal protection and environmental activism for over 15 years.

Hope Bohanec is a nationally recognized leader in the animal protection movement, and a well-known presenter throughout the Bay Area and across the U.S. She now offers her organizational talents to In Defense of Animals (IDA) as their Grassroots Campaigns Director.

Cogen Bohanec has studied vegan nutrition formally and is currently applying for a PhD program at Berkeley.

Just prior to the talk, the public is also welcomed to participate in the monthly Lake County Vegan Food Potluck, being held at the same location, beginning at 5 p.m.

The Lake County Vegan Food Potlucks have become a well anticipated event each month since their inception in April of 2009. They are held the first Sunday of each month at a different location throughout Lake County.

Participants are invited to bring a vegan dish to feed six to eight people that includes no animal products (no meat, fish, cheese, dairy, honey, eggs or animal-based broth). But do be generous with veggies, fruits, nuts, beans, grains, mushrooms and seeds.

Please also bring your own re-usable plates, eating and serving utensils and non-alcoholic drinks.

For those who want to hear the talk only, please arrive before 6:30 p.m.

For more information, call Lori Patotzka at 707-994-1618.
