KELSEYVILLE – The Lake Family Resource Center (Lake FRC) was pleased to recently receive the donation of these beautifully handcrafted quilts created and donated by the Ladies of The Lake Quilt Guild to personalize the Freedom House Domestic Violence Shelter's rooms.
The colorful quilts will be added to the furnishings of the eight rooms available for domestic violence victims.
Each room is already personalized and the quilts will add an additional touch of home for domestic violence victims.
The guild members who brought the quilts were able to tour Freedom House and seemed delighted to know where their artwork would be utilized.
Freedom House Domestic Violence Shelter frequently benefits from community donations. If any group is interested in donating, please contact Executive Director Gloria Flaherty or Volunteer Services Coordinator Janice Hodges at 707-279-0563.
Lake Family Resource Center also accepts specific donations for its other programs.

NORTH COAST – Caltrans reports that the following road projects will be taking place around Lake County during the coming week.
Included are Mendocino County projects that may impact Lake County commuters.
LAKE COUNTY
Highway 29
– Paving from the junction of Route 29/175 near Lakeport to Mockingbird Lane will continue. Work hours are 4 a.m. to 4 p.m., weekdays. Traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction of travel. Motorists may experience minor traffic slowdowns. On Tuesday, July 20, and Wednesday, July 21, the southbound offramp to 11th Street (Exit 103) will be closed from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Motorists are advised to use an alternate route. Contractor – Granite Construction of Ukiah.
Highway 175
– AT&T of Sacramento has been granted a Caltrans Encroachment Permit for utility repairs near Road E on Monday, July 19, and Tuesday, July 20. Work hours are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays.
– PG&E of Ukiah has been granted a Caltrans Encroachment Permit for utility repairs from Napa Avenue to Stewart Street. Nighttime work hours are 10 p.m. to 9 a.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays.
Highway 281
– North Bay Construction of Petaluma has been granted a Caltrans Encroachment Permit for paving on Soda Bay Road. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays.
MENDOCINO COUNTY
Highway 1
– Paving from the Albion River Bridge to Jackson Street will continue. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays. Contractor – Granite Construction of Ukiah.
– Pavement repairs at Blue Slide Gulch, just south of Westport, will continue. Work hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 10-minute delays. Contractor – Mercer-Fraser of Eureka.
– A drainage repair project from 1.4 miles south of Hales Grove to 1.2 mile south of Mill Bank Resort will continue. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 10-minute delays. Contractor – Green Right O’Way Constructors of Willits.
Highway 20
– PG&E of Eureka has been granted a Caltrans Encroachment Permit for utility maintenance near Benson Lane beginning Monday, July 19. Work hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 10-minute delays.
Highway 101
– Installation of rock slope protection from Reeves Canyon Road to Ridgewood Ranch Road Lane began Friday, July 16. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., weekdays. Traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction of travel. Motorists may experience minor traffic slowdowns. Contractor – Granite Construction of Ukiah.
– Installation of rock slope protection from the South Willits Overhead bridge to the Haehl Overhead bridge will continue. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., weekdays. Traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction of travel. Motorists may experience minor traffic slowdowns. Contractor – Granite Construction of Ukiah.
– Bridge deck repairs at the Cummings Road Undercrossing will continue. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., weekdays. Traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction of travel. Motorists may experience minor traffic slowdowns. Contractor – DeBruin Construction Inc. of French Camp.

Highway 162
– A bridge widening project at Outlet Creek Bridge will continue. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 15-minute delays. Contractor – Viking Construction Co. Inc. of Rancho Cordova.
– Storm damage repair east of Sand Bank Creek began Friday, July 16. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 15-minute delays. Contractor – Granite Construction of Ukiah.
Highway 222
– Replacement of the Russian River Bridge will continue. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control with a temporary signal will be in effect 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Motorists should anticipate 15-minute delays during work hours and five-minute delays at other times. Contractor – CC Myers of Rancho Cordova.
– Rogina Water Co. of Talmage has been granted a Caltrans Encroachment Permit to install a water line from Sandford Ranch Road to Talmage Court. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., weekdays. Intermittent one-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays.
Highway 253
– A bridge widening project at Anderson Creek Bridge will continue. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 15-minute delays. Contractor – Viking Construction Co. Inc. of Rancho Cordova.
– Construction of a retaining wall from Singley Cattlepass to the Soda Creek Bridge will continue. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays. Contractor – Mendocino Construction Services of Willits.

LOWER LAKE – The Lower Lake Historic School Preservation Committee invites the public to a Living History Day on Saturday, Aug. 7, at the Lower Lake Historic Schoolhouse Museum, 16435 Main Street, Lower Lake.
Museum staff, dressed in period costume, will demonstrate Victorian-era household items and playing the 1906 player piano.
Toys and games from the early 1900s will be available for the children, along with the viewing of 3-D pictures through a stereoscope.
Take a step back in time with us and learn about local history. Museum hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and admission is free.

SACRAMENTO – Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed into law a bill authored by First District Assemblymember Wesley Chesbro (D-North Coast) that gives open space and parks districts more tools to preserve and protect rural lands.
“AB 1962 allows landowners to voluntarily convey land directly to open space and parks districts,” Chesbro said.
“Previously, if landowners wanted to donate property or an easement for a trail or other conservation purpose, they first had to go to a city or county to seek approval,” Chesbro explained. “Because open space districts are also local government agencies, this law gives open space districts the approval authority. This law makes it more efficient to expand open space, build trails and accomplish other land conservation goals.”
The Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation and Open Space District sponsored AB 1962. The new law will allow the district to work out planning, financing and other regulatory requirements before taking on the responsibilities of ownership of offered land.
The law does not remove the authority of local governments to determine whether the proposed uses conform to local general plans.
“This legislation streamlines our land conservation efforts,” said Bill Keene, general manager of the Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation and Open Space District. “It allows us to focus our resources on protecting natural areas of Sonoma County, connecting people to those lands, and preserving dwindling local government resources. We thank Assemblymember Chesbro and Gov. Schwarzenegger for promptly enacting this key legislation.”
"This bill enables regional park and open space districts to carry out the core mission of developing conservation projects of benefit to local communities efficiently and effectively,“ added Darla Guenzler, executive director of the California Council of Land Trusts, a co-sponsor of the bill.
