AmeriCorps seeks new members

LAKE COUNTY – The Lake County Office of Education's AmeriCorps Program will be recruiting approximately 60 members for the 2007-2008 school year.

AmeriCorps engages 50,000 Americans age 17 and older each year in intensive service to meet community needs in education, the environment, public safety, homeland security and other areas.

Members serve with national nonprofit organizations like Habitat for Humanity, the American Red Cross, and Teach for America, as well as with hundreds of smaller community organizations, both secular and faith-based.

In exchange for a year of service, AmeriCorps members earn an education award that can be used to pay for college or to pay back qualified student loans.

In Lake County, the AmeriCorps program is administered through the Lake County Office of Education. In 2001-02, Lake County AmeriCorps members served as tutors in local middle and high schools. In 2002-03, the program expanded to include members serving as elementary school tutors and a school readiness component, in which members assisted staff of local preschools, Healthy Start programs and a car seat program.

If you would like to learn more about AmeriCorps please come to one of our informational meetings.

Attendance at an informational meeting is required part of the interview process.
