Academies prepare students for 21st century careers

LAKE COUNTY – The Lake County College-Going Initiative, a partnership between the Lake County Office of Education and the University of California San Francisco, is pleased to announce a summer Science and Algebra Academy aimed at preparing students for 21st Century careers in math, science and technology.

This exciting program will be offered at Upper Lake High School, Terrace Middle School, Clear Lake High School, Mt. Vista Middle School, Middletown Middle School, Middletown High School and Lower Lake.

The academies will be held during the summer for four weeks, Monday through Friday, for four hours a day, and are limited to 28 students in each academy.

Students will strengthen their academic skills in algebra, science and English through work-based projects that duplicate real-world skills. For example, students will build a small solar car and will then race the car in a competition against neighboring academy students.

Program highlights include at least one field trip to a museums and/or college. A college scholarship will be available to one lucky seventh grade student (courtesy of Mendo Lake Credit Union), and eighth and ninth grade students will be eligible for high school and college credit upon successful completion of the program.

This innovative program is offered in partnership with the University of California San Francisco, ARCHES (Alliance for Regional Collaboration to Heighten Educational Success, United Way of the Wine Country, Mendo-Lake Credit Union, and Migrant Education and Mendocino College.

Students are enrolled through an application process and priority will be given to students who will be the first in their families to attend college.
