The Lodge at Blue Lakes is a premier family resort and hotel with a Special Events Center located in Upper Lake on the picturesque shores of Blue Lakes.
The lodge is committed to the development of youth in academics while supporting local communities through the Academic Decathlon.
“We were so inspired by the enthusiasm of the competition for the scholarship awards The Lodge at Blue Lakes recently donated, we decided to continue as a major sponsor of the Academic Decathlon for Lake and Mendocino counties’ schools,” according to Maryann and Peter Schmid, owners of The Lodge at Blue Lakes.
Last year, The Lodge provided college scholarships for top-scoring students at each participating school.
For the 2011-12 competition, they will once again sponsor the college scholarships, as well as host educational workshops for students and parents based on this year’s theme: “The Age of Empire.”
Last year’s competition hosted six school districts from Lake, Mendocino and Colusa counties, with 78 students competing for individual and team awards.
The Academic Decathlon, which has been facilitated by LCOE for over 15 years, is a competitive event honoring "athletes of the mind.”
The competition consists of ten tests, and provides students the opportunity to participate in an educational forum, fostering a deep respect for knowledge, cooperation, and self-esteem.
Communication tests include essay, prepared and impromptu speech, and interview. Written tests include art, music, language/literature, mathematics, economics, science, and social science, along with a written and oral Super Quiz. An optional art and poetry contest is also offered for interested students.
This year’s Academic Decathlon will be held on two Saturdays.
On Jan. 28, 2012, students will compete in the interview, speech, and essay portion of the competition, and over 50 community members will be needed as volunteer judges.
On the morning of Feb. 4, 2012, the second day of the competition, students will take their written tests, and in the evening the public is invited participate in a SuperQuiz relay and awards ceremony.

The award recognizes the Hidden Valley Lake resident for outstanding leadership and academic accomplishments.
Mediacom annually gives $1,000 scholarships to 50 graduating seniors to provide support for the students’ post-secondary education.
Shawn Swatosh, area operations manager for Mediacom, presented the award during the high school’s recognition program and noted that the recipient can use the scholarship for educational expenses at any accredited two-year or four-year college or university within the U.S.
“As a technology company, Mediacom understands how important it is to invest in future leaders like Bonnie Coit,” Swatosh said. “We’re proud to consistently support local students with scholarship support.”
More than 1,400 students applied for the scholarships. This is the tenth consecutive year Mediacom has funded World Class Scholarships for students who live in areas served by the cable and broadband company’s North Central Division.
Applications for Mediacom’s 2012 scholarships will be sent to high school guidance counselors in the fall of 2011.
Mediacom Communications is the nation's eighth largest cable television company and one of the leading cable operators focused on serving the smaller cities in the United States, with a significant concentration in the Midwestern and Southeastern regions.

UKIAH, Calif. – The Mendocino College Foundation’s annual “Gala on the Green” is a mix of dining, auctions, music, raffles and wine tasting.
Additionally, a private one-hour tour of the 13-acre garden at Campovida, 13601 Old River Road, Hopland, will be offered to Gala guests prior to the June 18 festivities.
Gala on the Green, an annual fundraiser to benefit Mendocino College students and programs, presented by the Mendocino College Foundation, will take place at the pavilion at Campovida.
The gala begins at 5:30 p.m. and will be preceded by the optional garden tour between 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner, wine, live and silent auctions, mystery boxes, a wine pull raffle and musical entertainment by the George Husaruk Trio.
Tickets for the event are $100 per person. Tables, with seating for eight people each, may be reserved for $700. Tickets may be purchased by accessing the foundation’s Web site, http://foundation.mendocino.edu, or calling the foundation office, 707-467-1018.
Sponsors for this year’s Gala on the Green include Campovida, Mendo Lake Credit Union, TLCD Architecture, Savings Bank of Mendocino County, Midstate Construction, SHN Consulting Engineers, Paul Conrado, Richard Cooper, Katherine “Kit” Elliott and George Husaruk, Max and Joan Schlienger, and Wells Fargo advisors John Goldsmith and Rand Rodgers.
Campovida owners Anna Beuselinck and Gary Breen invite Gala attendees to arrive early and take in the garden tour with Ken Boek. Calling Boek the “soul of the garden,” Beuselinck said he is also known as “Campovida’s Voice of Nature.”
Guests may experience an “organic immersion” by walking through the garden “which caters to the five senses and is an educational experience of nature’s diversity,” said Beuselinck.
Individuals may also taste Mendocino Farms Wines, sourced from local vineyards, and, with guidance, pair them with edible flowers and herbs from the garden, she added.
Artist Eva Nicolait (http://www.evanicolait.com/) will be showcasing her work in the Campovida barns and wine tasting areas, according to Beuselinck. Nicolait has donated a piece of her artwork to be auctioned at the Gala.
“The Campovida garden tour is a wonderful way to kick off our Gala,” said Christy Scollin, co-chair for the Foundation’s Special Events Committee. “Strolling through the colorful garden while learning about the organic vegetables, flowers and herbs is a delightful way to start the evening. We are fortunate to be having our event at such a beautiful outdoor venue.”
