Quilala named to Dean's List at Biola University

LA MIRADA, Calif. – Oscar Quilala II was named to Biola University's Dean's List for academic excellence.

Quilala II from Lakeport, California, was one of approximately 1,500 students who were named to the dean's list in spring 2020.

Biola students are placed on the dean's list to honor those with a GPA of 3.6 or higher while enrolled in 12 or more credits and whose cumulative GPA is at least 3.2.

"Inclusion in Biola University's Dean's List is reserved for students who demonstrate exceptional performance in their academic studies. This honor signifies hard work, engagement, and investment in scholarship," said Tamara Anderson, associate provost of Academic Effectiveness and Administration. "These attributes are the building blocks of continued success, not only in the classroom, but in the workplace and in the student's personal lives. We celebrate these students and their achievement, looking forward to their future accomplishments."

CDFA announces funding for 2020 California Agriculture Special Interest License Plate Grant Program to support ag literacy

SACRAMENTO – The California Department of Food and Agriculture is now accepting proposals for the 2020 California Agriculture Special Interest License Plate grant program.

Each year, this program provides an estimated $250,000 in grant funding to promote agricultural education and leadership activities for students at the K-12, post-secondary, and adult education levels.

Proceeds generated through the sales of specialized, agriculture-themed license plates through the California Department of Motor Vehicles have made this opportunity available.

Funding is available on a competitive basis for eligible agricultural education programs as well as government agencies and nonprofit organizations that administer agricultural education programs.

Proposals must be submitted electronically by Thursday, Oct. 22, at 5 pm PST.

The CalAgPlate program has funded more than $1.4 million in youth educational activities since the program's inception.

Thompson launches 2020 Congressional Student Leadership Council; open to high school students across the Fifth District

NORTHERN CALIFORNIA – On Friday, Congressman Mike Thompson (CA-05) announced he is now accepting applications for his 2020 Student Leadership Council, open to high school students in California’s Fifth Congressional District.

Launched in 2019, the Student Leadership Council is a chance for local students to learn more about their government and develop leadership skills.

“One of the most inspiring parts about representing our district is getting to know the incredible young people who live here and will be our next generation of leaders. It’s on all of us to work to support them and give them the tools they need to thrive and grow,” said Thompson. “That’s why I am proud to launch my 2020 Student Leadership Council, open to all local high school students and with a new structure to suit our virtual learning environment. I encourage all eligible students to apply.”

Applications for Thompson’s 2020 Student Leadership Council are open until Friday, Sept. 25.

This year’s Virtual Council will bring together students from all of the five counties Thompson represents – Contra Costa, Lake, Napa, Solano and Sonoma.

Thompson announces 2020 App Challenge

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – Congressman Mike Thompson (CA-05) announced he is now accepting applications for his 2020 Congressional App Challenge, open to all middle and high school-aged students from the Fifth Congressional District.

“Learning how to design and create for the 21st Century is a critical part of ensuring our young people are prepared to meet the challenges of the future. That’s why I am glad to announce my 2020 Congressional App Challenge, a competition I sponsor each year to encourage our young people to imagine and develop an app,” said Thompson. “Every year I am so excited to see what our students create and recognize the next generation of talent. I encourage all eligible students to compete!”

Applications for the challenge must be submitted by 9 a.m. Pacific Time on Monday, Oct. 19, 2020. You can click here to learn more and to submit your application.

Thompson represents California’s Fifth Congressional District, which includes all or part of Contra Costa, Lake, Napa, Solano and Sonoma counties.
