The center, located in Lakeport, is offering some special programs this spring that may be of interest to Lake County residents.
Business is the second most popular major for Mendocino College Lake County residents. Because of this, the Lake Center is offering four business classes that will take place Monday through Thursday evenings this coming spring.
These classes are designed for working adults who are looking to progress towards an Associate’s Degree or improve skills to earn a better wage.
The construction industry is booming in Lake County and there are jobs available in this sector. The Lake Center is offering a Construction Fundamentals class and Residential Electrical class. These classes can help prepare students for employment in the construction industry.
The Lake Center is offering a new Basic Computer Skills Class (CSC 520). This non-credit class is designed to help students with little or no computer experience to learn things such as file management, applications, and internet basics. This class is perfect for older adults looking to learn computer skills. A Spanish/English bilingual assistant will be available to help English language learners through the course.
Other unique classes that may be of community interest this semester include: Food and Wine Pairing (CAM 71), Conversational Spanish (SPN 100/101), and new this semester, Beginning Voice (MUS 230A).

LOWER LAKE, Calif. – The holidays are approaching and Carlé High School would like to show appreciation.
A big thanks to Alan Siegal’s media class for designing and making gifts to give back to our community.
Harrison Price is designing and making key chains to the Northshore Fire Department. Caiden Harvey is designing keychains for our bus drivers. Piper Carr, Katie Roath, Marisa Wynn, Maya Overstreet, Makala McMullen, Austin Griffith, Khaila Hardy, Desiree Krebs, Sami Strowbridge and Ta’Nari Dukes are making bookmarks for students and staff of Highlands Academy, Blue Heron and Carlé High School.
Bookmarks and keychains will be gifted a week before holiday break.
Our Gold level students for the second grading period include Johnny Caldwell, Hunter Chadwick, Maya Dittemore, Eric Espinoza, Damon Fieldon, Manny Lopez, Katie Roath, Gabrielle Rozelski, Ana Solorio, Austin Wylie, Marisa Wynn, Howard Womack and Marisa Gavazza. They will be rewarded for their hard work with a trip to Scandia on Dec. 18.
In addition congratulations to Maria Griffith for achieving Carlé student of the week. She was nominated by Angie Harris, who spoke highly of her stating.
“Maria has been working really hard to finish her credits and get graduated. She does everything with a positive attitude and with a smile on her face,” Harris said.

As part of the Federal Pathways Program, the OneUSDA Internship will provide students a way to explore serving their country through a career in government while gaining work experience in agriculture, natural resources, rural development, and other career fields.
“The improvements we’re making to internships at USDA will enable us to recruit the best and retain the best,” said Secretary Perdue. “Today’s young people are the future of America and there are few things more American than agriculture. We’re aiming to find young talent, with a diverse background, across all 50 states, to begin their careers as an intern with USDA.”
The OneUSDA Internship Program offers Federal opportunities to students currently enrolled in qualifying educational programs or institutions, with a comprehensive developmental program intended to provide students with experience in a dynamic work environment that will enhance their educational goals and shape their career choices.
An internship with USDA will involve various components of on-the-job experience, mentorship, and training tailored to the student’s education, experience and interests.
During 2018, USDA was proud to host more than 3,000 interns throughout the country, about half of which were through the Federal Pathways Program.
In the Summer of 2019, USDA will hire Pathways Interns in hundreds of locations across every state in the country for the following occupational fields:
– Veterinary science;
– Biological sciences (e.g., natural resources management forestry, wildlife biology, fish biology, ecology, botany, rangeland management, recreation);
– Engineering;
– Agribusiness, contracting, procurement and industry;
– General administration and office support.
USDA is making sure the Summer 2019 OneUSDA internship job announcement is easier-than-ever for college students to find and apply for.
After choosing the geographic region of preference and the career path that best matches with students’ area of study and professional aspirations at http://www.usda.gov/Internships, students simply follow the weblinks to https://www.usajobs.gov/ to set up an account, then follow the prompts to apply to the internship.
When applying, applicants will also have an opportunity to indicate their preferred area of interest and USDA Agency or office.
USDA will start reviewing applications on Dec. 9, and the application window will close on Jan. 18, 2019.

Tafoya served the education community, including faculty, students and the administration, as well as the community of Yolo County in an exemplary manner as the trustee of Area 6 of the Yuba Community College District from December 2000 until September 2018.
“Xavier Tafoya leaves a legacy of dedicated service to his community and to the Yuba Community College District. He was and still is a tireless advocate for students and for Woodland,” said Chancellor Douglas Houston, “His numerous contributions while on the Governing Board have positioned YCCD to thrive in the years to come.”
Serving on the board for 18 years, Tafoya was elected as the YCCD Board chair/president in 2004 and again in 2011, guiding the board and district through times of changes.
Tafoya’s leadership was instrumental in the accreditation of Woodland Community College, the passing of the $190 million Measure J Bond, and the development of a District Diversity Plan to attract qualified people of color to the faculty of the district’s colleges.
“Trustee Tafoya’s contributions, insight, and selfless service to our students and community will be missed. Filling his seat on the board was not an easy task,” said Board President Michael Pasquale. “The board has risen to that challenge with the provisional appointment of Ms. Susan Alves.”
Upon Tafoya’s resignation, the Yuba Community College District Board of Trustees initiated a search to provisionally appoint a new trustee, receiving three highly qualified applicants from the process.
The governing board conducted interviews with each applicant at a regular meeting of the board on Oct. 11 and took action to appoint Alves to fill the vacancy.
Alves took the oath of office at the Board of Trustees’ regular meeting on Nov. 8.
“We welcome Trustee Alves and I look forward to working with her in advocating for our students and district,” President Pasquale said.
Alves received her Bachelor of Science in agriculture, with an emphasis on education, from California State University, Chico and her California Multiple Subject Clear Teaching Credential from California State University, Sacramento.
She served as the principal of Maxwell Elementary School in Woodland from 2002 until 2011.
In 2011, Ms. Alves volunteered with the United States Peace Corps in Paraguay, South America where she worked with Paraguayans to provide training and accomplish goals in reforestation, soil recuperation, teacher training and English language instruction.
Upon returning from service in the Peace Corps, Alves taught second, fourth and fifth grades at Whitehead and Woodland Prairie Elementary Schools from 2013 until her retirement in 2018.
“Trustee Alves has clearly dedicated herself to public service,” said Chancellor Douglas Houston, “She will be an excellent addition to the YCCD Governing Board and I look forward to working with her.”
YCCD spans eight counties and nearly 4,192 square miles of territory in rural, north-central California.
