CLEARLAKE, Calif. – More than 100 family, friends and colleagues were on hand to celebrate the 2018 Commencement Ceremony of the Lake County Office of Education Medical Assistant program on Tuesday, May 22, at the Cornelison Event Center in Clearlake.
The course instructors lauded this group of 15 graduates for being “motivated, focused and empathetic leaders.”
This graduating class received more honor roll rankings than any other previous medical assistant class. Six of the 15 students scored 90 percent or higher on their coursework to earn this honor.
Megan Wold earned the honor of valedictorian, and Micaela Martinez and Camilyn Wisely were named as salutatorians.
Wold congratulated her classmates, and thanked the Lake County Office of Education for providing the opportunity for adult education in Lake County.
The graduates completed 680 hours of instruction and administrative work over a nine-month period, starting their journey in September of 2017. Externships were performed at the Clearlake VA Clinic, where students earned real-life experience.
Lake County Superintendent of Schools Brock Falkenberg opened the ceremonies by congratulating the graduates and telling them, “I can’t stop smiling. This is fantastic.”
Keynote speaker was Clearlake VA Clinic Director Carol Ann Brown, RN, BSN. Brown is a former medical assistant, and spoke about different career paths open to those with the medical assistant training.
The graduates sat for the National Certified Medical Assistant exam on Saturday, June 2. Once they pass, they will be recognized as nationally Certified Medical Assistants.
Several graduates already have job placement in the medical field.
Brown pointed out that there are hundreds of open positions for medical assistants right now, highlighting the importance of this vocation in the medical field.

With a shortage of home builders and specialty tradespeople in Lake and Mendocino counties, the Sustainable Construction and Energy Technology Program at Mendocino College aims to bridge the gap.
The free seminar titled, “Start your own Construction Business!” takes place Saturday, June 16, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Mendocino College Room 4210, in the library on the Ukiah Campus.
The recent loss of more than 400 homes in Mendocino County and more than 6,000 homes in neighboring Sonoma and Lake counties as a result of last fall’s wildfires has created a huge demand for technical building assistance.
This compounds the housing shortage that existed before the Redwood Complex Fires. Couple this with the fact that some of the most respected builders in our region are nearing retirement, and it is easy to understand the difficulty fire survivors are facing in rebuilding their homes.
“While the charred remains of homes have been successfully removed to make way for rebuilding, for fire survivors there’s still the matter of finding the building contractor to help to accomplish the task,” said seminar coordinator Mary Anne Landis.
The workshop will present content on contracting basics, strategies for success and business skills that will help people starting their own construction business avoid pitfalls.
The morning panel of experienced, successful contractors will cover questions such as: What are key ingredients to being successful? How do you secure new clients? Should you expand? How do you buffer yourself from a downturn? How do you maintain crew morale?
After the panel discussion, a representative from the State Contractors Licensing Board will be available to describe what participants can and cannot do as a builder without a license, what it takes to get a license, what kind of contracts a contractor can engage, as well as answering general questions.
Participants need to bring a brown bag lunch. After lunch, a panel of experts from The West Co. will present the steps required to start a business in Mendocino County, a brief overview of best business practices, and how to stay organized as a self-employed contractor.

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – On Wednesday, May 23, at the Clear Lake High Awards presentations, Rosa Bergeron, a member of the Delta Iota Tau Scholarship Committee, presented three $1,000 scholarships.
The scholarships were presented to Valerie Hutton and Jessica Romero. Taylor Buchholz, also a recipient, was not able to be present.
Delta Iota Tau is a Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi International, one of three chapters in Lake County.
Delta Iota Tau is committed to serving our communities through monetary donations to various deserving organizations and individuals.
The group raises funds all year through its See’s Candies sales at North Lake Medical Pharmacy in the Bruno’s Shopping Center, Lakeport.
This year the sorority will be planting gardens at the Lake County Fair and will support other organizations efforts such as the Westside Community Park in Lakeport.
