Mendocino College Volleyball gets back on track

UKIAH – The Mendocino College Volleyball team pounded out a hard-fought victory Friday, Sept 21 at the College of the Redwoods.

The Eagles came away with a four-set win. After dropping the first set 22-30, Mendocino proceeded to sweep the next three 30-26, 30-23, 30-26.

Mendocino’s offense was paced by sophomore setter Jenny Stark (Clearlake), who dished out 20 assists. Sophomore Jamie Brown (Potter Valley) led the Eagle attack with 11 kills. Freshman outside hitter Jenn Cox (Upper Lake) recorded four kills. Freshman Angela Newell (Fort Bragg) notched four kills, three digs, and had three key aces at the service line.

“The last time we played them, Redwoods was on the last leg of a long road trip and were a bit ragged this time around they were much sharper and we were fortunate to come out of there with a win,” Mendocino Coach Ori Polkinghorne said.

Redwoods came out serving strong which fueled their game one win. Game two went back and forth until the Eagles were able to push to seal the win. Game three was critical to the momentum of the match as Redwoods went up 12-4 and looked as if they were in control.

At that point, Freshman Shana Hiatt (Clearlake) stepped to the service line with her potent serve and fired point after point until Mendocino had caught Redwoods at 12. Hiatt ended the evening with seven aces.

The Eagles were able to win games three and four.

“It was a great team effort for us tonight. We are really starting to see our team potential emerging,” Polkinghorne said.

This week is a great opportunity to see the Eagles volleyball team in action as they host the defending Bay Valley Conference champs Solano Community College on Wednesday and then take on Contra Costa at home on Friday.

Both matches start at 6:30 p.m. in the Mendocino College gym.
