UKIAH, Calif. – The Mendocino College women’s soccer team rounded out the year with not one but two major accomplishments.

In January, the team was honored as the California Community College Athletic Associations’ Scholar Team for 2011 and they won the Bay Valley Women’s Soccer League Championship for the first time in program history.

The Scholar Team Award is the highest academic team achievement given annually by the California Community College Athletic Association.

All team members must have excelled academically with a total GPA of 3.0 or higher and the team has demonstrated better than average accomplishments in intercollegiate athletic competition.

“Our student-athletes earned on average a 3.23 grade point average during their season of sport. The coaching staff are very proud of these young ladies and we believe that they represent our women's team, athletic department, Mendocino College, and our wonderful community with tremendous pride and respect,” said Coach Shane Huff.

Mendocino College Athletic Director Mike Mari had a similar reaction.

“We are delighted with the news of the soccer teams Scholar Award for 2011 and their winning the Bay Valley League Championship for the first time ever,” Mari said. “Winning the team and individual Scholar Award is not new to Mendocino College having won in 2010 for Softball and 2004 for Football and Volleyball. Having programs receive this type of recognition only reinforces the efforts our student-athletes, coaches, faculty, and staff have made to create a successful environment for our students to succeed.”
