Clear Lake/Kelseyville High School girls varsity rules the pool

LAKEPORT, Calif. – The combined Clear Lake/Kelseyville High School swim team notched wins against Santa Rosa’s Piner High in both girls’ and boys’ varsity on Thursday at the Westshore Pool.  

The girls were especially dominant, winning 117-32 against a closely matched field.

The boys also won handily 85-49 but faced a team less than half their number.

Girls’ varsity placed first in all 11 events while the best finish for Piner was third. “The girls came through big-time,” said Coach Agustine Merodio. “They got off to a slow start this season but were definitely the more experienced team in the pool today.”

Senior Shao-Jia Chang and sophomore Liz Fricker swam exceptionally well, winning both of their individual events.

Chang won the 200 IM and 100 backstroke, while Fricker took first in the 100 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke.

Other top finishers included senior Allison Hanson (500 freestyle, again beating the boys’ top times), senior Lily Rae (50 freestyle), freshman Ciarra Snow (200 freestyle) and freshman Iris Vasquez (100 butterfly).

Three girls’ relay teams sailed to victory in the 200-medley (Hanson, Chang, Snow and junior Sarah Merodio), the 200 free (Rae, Fricker, Vasquez and junior Heather Werner,), and the 400 free (Hanson, Merodio, Chang, and Rae).

Second place scores went to senior Asia Jones (200 freestyle), senior Sierra Alexander (50 freestyle), Merodio (200 IM, 100 breaststroke), Snow (100 butterfly), Werner (100 freestyle), and Hanson (100 backstroke).

The 200 free relay team of Alexander, Snow, Jones, and freshman Noe Urquiza also came in second.

In boys’ varsity, first place times were achieved by junior Conner Disney (200 freestyle), junior Nathan Powers (50 freestyle), senior Evan Thompson (100 butterfly), junior Andres Tejeda (500 freestyle) and freshman Owen Lawler (100 breaststroke).

The 400 freestyle relay was also won by Thompson, Tejeda, Disney and senior Taylor Hernandez.

Second place swimmers included senior Pedro Hernandez (100 backstroke), Powers (200 freestyle), Lawler (100 IM) and Disney (500 freestyle).

The 200 medley relay team of freshman Kyle Hanson, Tejeda, Thompson, and Powers placed second, as well as the 200 free relay team of senior Alec Snyder, Tejeda, Thompson and Lawler.

Clear Lake/Kelseyville next duel will be against El Molino on April 11 at Ives Park Pool in Sebastopol starting at 3:30 p.m.
