UKIAH, Calif. – On Saturday, March 5, Terrace Middle School sent 14 wrestlers to compete in the weekend's Pomolita Invitational Middle School Wrestling Tournament.
The school has what may be the biggest wrestling teams in its history – 12 boys and 12 girls.
Out of the 14 wrestlers competing for the Terrace Vikings this weekend, there were seven boys and seven girls.
The Vikings won 11 total medals – two gold medals, four silver medals and five bronze medals.
In the girls' competition, Mavis Pyorre went 3-0, with two pins to win a gold medal. She pinned Juliana Noriega of Pomolita in the first period.
Next up, Mavis pinned Carmen Perez of Windsor in the third period, after leading 12 to 3. Then, she would face Bella Vanucci of Pomolita, who could not go on and Mavis won by injury default.
Teagan Miller went 2-0, with two pins to win a gold medal. She pinned Alya Halfacre of Eagle Peak, then in the finals match came from behind to pin Isabella Knight of Willits.
Ashley Vasquez won a silver medal. Carlie Green and Merari Alvarez each won bronze medals.
For the boys, Enzo Torres, Jesse Lewis and Sterling Wong each won silver medals. Donald Mingo, Frank Weiler and Blake Moak each won bronze medals.
Also wrestling tough for the Vikings were Elijah Alvarez, Mackenzie Markham and Bryanna Johnson.
“For only a week of practice and our first tournament, they all did great!” said Head Coach Steve Fisher.
