MENDOCINO NATIONAL FOREST, Calif. – Saturday, June 9, is National Get Outdoors Day and it is a fee-free day on the Mendocino National Forest.

On this day, fees are waived at Forest Service managed campgrounds and the Red Bluff Recreation Area boat launch.

The fee waiver will not apply to campsites at Lake Pillsbury that are operated under concessionaire through PG&E.

Forest visitors might be interested to know that the California Department of Fish and Wildlife placed approximately 1,000 rainbow trout in Hammerhorn Lake on the Covelo Ranger District this week.

Visitors to this area will enjoy the five-acre lake and nine campsites with fire rings and tables. Accessible facilities include: restroom, picnic tables and the quarter-mile Hammerhorn Trail next to the lake shore from the accessible campground to two fully accessible fishing piers.

This is the first time that Hammerhorn Lake has been stocked since 2015, due to road washouts in the 2012 North Pass Fire burned area. Hammerhorn Lake is about 30 miles east of Covelo at an elevation of 3,480 feet.

“Whether you like to camp, fish, hike, birdwatch or you just want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, the Mendocino National Forest offers nearly one million awesome acres to get outdoors and explore this weekend. We look forward to seeing you on the forest,” Forest Supervisor Ann Carlson said.
