Mendocino National Forest urge fire safety over July 4 holiday

MENDOCINO NATIONAL FOREST, Calif. – The number of visitors in campgrounds and on trails in the Mendocino National Forest generally increases over the busy July 4 holiday.

With an increase in visitation, officials remind the public that it’s critical to practice fire safety at all times while visiting the forest.

Just a week ago, the Pawnee fire started in Lake County, caused evacuations and on the second day burned onto the southern end of the forest.

The fire behavior on this incident illustrated how quickly a fire can spread out of control. As of June 29, the fire was 56 percent contained after 13,700 acres burned.

Forest Supervisor Ann Carlson, reminds visitors, “Please enjoy the forest over the holiday, but remember, it takes all of us working together to prevent a wildfire from starting.”

Remember, fireworks are never allowed on public lands. Check with local offices for current information before traveling to the forest.

Campfire permits are required for the use of campfires, charcoal fires or portable gas stoves outside designated recreation sites.

Permits are available online at http://www.preventwildfireca.org/.

Follow these campfire guidelines:

– Clear all flammable material away from the fire for a minimum of five feet in all directions.
– Make a fire only if you have a shovel and sufficient water to put it out.
– Have a responsible person in attendance at all times.
– Never leave your campfire unattended.
– Never build a campfire on a windy day.
– To make sure your campfire is out, drown with water and stir with dirt, making
sure all burned materials are extinguished. Feel with your hand to make sure it’s out cold.
– Every campfire will be put dead out before leaving it.

Mendocino National Forest offices will be closed Wednesday, July 4 in observance of the Independence Day holiday.

In addition, the Covelo district office will be closed July 5 and 6.
