Windrem to speak about Clear Lake hitch Saturday

KELSEYVILLE – Peter Windrem, president of the Chi Council for Clear Lake Hitch, will speak at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, June 20, in the Clear Lake State Park visitor center auditorium.

Windrem was instrumental in the founding of the council in 2005. The council is seeking to learn why the number of hitch, a species of fish that is endemic to Lake County, is dwindling.

“The chi are running,” has been a herald of spring chant around Clear Lake for centuries.

What did it mean to the early natives and what does it mean to us today? The Native Americans referred to the hitch as Chi (lavinia exilicauda chi) and they are also concerned about the survival of this species in Clear Lake.

On April 28,2009, on nomination by Lake County Fish and Wildlife Advisory Committee, the Board of Supervisors presented the Chi Council with the prestigious Conservationist of the Year award.

There is no entrance fee to the park for attending scheduled programs, walks, or visiting the museum. The Visitor Center, including the gift shop, will open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday throughout the summer.

Guided walks will take place on the second and fourth Sunday at 8:30 a.m.

Clear Lake State Park is located at 5300 Soda Bay Road, Kelseyville.
