HVL Men's Niners club reports on June 27 stroke play event

HIDDEN VALLEY LAKE, Calif. – The HVL Men’s Niners Golf Club held a stroke play tournament on Thursday, June 27.

The results were:

  • First flight: Fred Figg was first at net 31. Jim Wilson and Bob Chesnut tied for second at 32.
  • Second flight: Jim Stratton was first with 31. Doug Healy and Paul Bertlin tied for second with 32.  
  • Third flight: Ned Munger and Ron Clark tied for the top spot at 33. Jim Hodges and Daryl Stoner tied for third at 34.  
  • Fourth flight: Bob Schossler finished first at 33. Dennis Day was second at 36. Ed Carver and Jay Hodges were third at 38.   

Closest to the par 3 pins were Bill Kyle and Jim Hodges.

Chip-ins were scored by Paul Bertlin, Jim Wilson, Fred Figg, Jeff Markham, Paul Harvey, Brian Rudy and Bill Kyle.  

Fifty-four men participated in the day’s events.

Football camp takes place July 26-27

UPPER LAKE, Calif. – A youth football camp will take place in late July.

The camp will be held at the Upper Lake High School football and practice fields on Clover Valley Road from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 26, and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, July 27.

The noncontact camp is for all children up to eighth grade starting fall 2013.

It will introduce the fundamentals of football – blocking, running, passing, receiving and kicking.  

Each camper will experience each of these elements of the game to either learn a new skill or enrich experiences with which they are already familiar.  

Teamwork, discipline and sportsmanship will be common themes throughout the camp activities.

The cost of the camp is $35, which includes a camp t-shirt and water bottle.

Registration is due by July 12.

Walk-up registration is OK but water bottles and t-shirts will be limited.

Pick up a registration form at Upper Lake High School or Lakeside Family Fun & Event Center.

Jackson Demonstration State Forest to host recreation task force July 3

NORTH COAST, Calif. – California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) Mendocino Unit is pleased to announce a contract has been awarded for a Recreation User Survey on Jackson Demonstration State Forest (JDSF).  

A JDSF Recreation Task Force meeting will be held at the Camp One Day use area on Wednesday, July 3, at 2 p.m.

The survey contractor will provide an overview of the survey design and methodology.  

The public is encouraged to attend.    

The recreation user survey will be conducted on random dates and locations within JDSF throughout the summer and early fall.

The results of the recreation user survey will help guide development of a recreation plan.

Information regarding the meeting is available at the Cal Fire Fort Bragg office located at 802 N. Main St., Fort Bragg, telephone 707-964-5674. Office hours are 8 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.,  Monday through Friday.

Multiple uses of JDSF for a wide variety of activities that benefit the public, the economy and natural resources are what our demonstration forests are all about.

Boggs Mountain hike takes place June 26

COBB, Calif. – Join guide Darlene Hecomovich for a refreshing morning hike on Boggs Mountain this Wednesday, June 26.

The three-mile, casual-paced hike will take place from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on various Boggs trails.

Bring water, a snack and wear sturdy shoes.

Meet in the parking lot of Boggs Mountain Demonstration Forest, which is located about one mile north of Cobb Village on Highway 175. Turn right at the large blue State Forest sign.
