LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – The Lake County Land Trust is pleased to announce the nature education program for children ages 7-12 at the trust’s Rodman Preserve Nature Education Center near Upper Lake is resuming on Saturday, May 19.
The trust plans to present the program on the third Saturday of each month through October 2012.
Leading the program will be well-known local naturalist and educator, Elaine Mansell.
Mansell is a retired teacher and is looking forward to continuing one of her greatest passions – educating children about nature.
She worked for the California State Parks for 15 years, starting out as a volunteer and eventually becoming the park’s interpretive specialist.
She led the Junior Ranger program at Clear Lake State Park, did campfire programs, hikes, and still leads school groups at the park.
Mansell's program will focus on all aspects of the Rodman Preserve, including the riparian habitats, birds, and upland oaks.
Students will walk down to the preserve’s wetland areas and “observe critters in the water, out of the water, and in the air,” she explained.
Mansell will draw on her experience and knowledge of what kids love. Students can become “Rodman Explorers,” complete with certificate.
The Land Trust is asking for reservations for this free and fun program.

The Rodman Preserve and Nature Education Center is located at 6350 Westlake Road, Upper Lake.
Take the Nice-Lucerne Cut-off off of Highway 29, between Lakeport and Upper Lake. Turn east onto the Nice-Lucerne Cut-off, then left on to Westlake Road. The preserve entry is to the immediate right after turning on to Westlake.
The preserve is owned and operated by the Lake County Land Trust.

HIDDEN VALLEY LAKE, Calif. – The H.V.L. Men's Niners Golf Club held a two-man (team) Pinehurst Competition on May 3.
The results were:
- "A" Flight: The teams of Jim Brown/Jim Wilson and Dave Mann/Al Burrows tied for first with net 31. Ben Kennedy/Randy Brown and Jim Stratton/DonDornbush tied for third at 32.
- "B" Flight: The father-son team of Jim Hodges/Jay Hodges took first with the low net of the day, 29. The teams of Mike Casolo/Phil Tyler and Ron Clark/Brian Pannizzera tied for second with 32.
Closest to the par 3 pins were Dave Mann and Al Burrows.
Fifty men – 25 teams – participated in the day's competition.

LAKE TAHOE – Roadside stations for inspections and decontaminations of motorized boats and watercraft are officially open for the 2012 boating season at 5 locations entering the Lake Tahoe Basin.
Locations and hours are:
- Meyers, at the junction of US 50 and Highway 89 (Open 8 a.m.-8 p.m.).
- Spooner Summit, at the junction of US 50 and Highway 28 in Nevada (Open 8 a.m.-8 p.m.).
- Highway 267, at Northstar Drive south of Truckee (Open 8 a.m.-6 p.m.).
- Highway 89, at Alpine Meadows Road north of Tahoe City (open 8 a.m.-8 p.m.).
- Highway 89, at Homewood Resort on Lake Tahoe's west shore (open 8 a.m.-6 p.m.).
“Boat inspections are critical to maintaining the health of Lake Tahoe and our local recreation-based economy,” said Ted Thayer, TRPA’s aquatic invasive species coordinator. “Through the efforts of the Tahoe Resource Conservation District’s well-trained inspectors and other private and public partners committed to the Lake, we expect to have another successful season.”
All motorized boats and watercraft require inspection for aquatic invasive species (AIS) prior to launching into Lake Tahoe.
Quagga and zebra mussels are especially problematic, as they are known to multiply quickly and colonize underwater surfaces, including docks and piers, water supply and filtration systems, buoys, moored boats and even the beautiful rocky shoreline.
They destroy fish habitat, ruin boat engines, and can negatively impact water quality and the local economy, recreation and ecosystem.
Boats and other watercraft are the largest transporters of AIS, and the inspection program is critical to preventing their spread into Lake Tahoe and other water bodies.
Knowingly transporting AIS into Lake Tahoe is against the law, and violators may be subject to fines.
A reminder of the need for watercraft inspections occurred on April 18, when inspectors at the Meyers roadside inspection station detected over 40 zebra mussels on a boat.
A Lake Tahoe resident, who had offered the boat for inspection training purposes, had recently purchased it from the Great Lakes. The boat was immediately quarantined by the California Department of Fish and Game and decontaminated by Tahoe RCD staff multiple times using 140-degree hot water and until it was completely cleared of all signs of invasive species.
Boaters are encouraged to clean, drain, and dry their boats prior to arriving at inspection stations in order to save everyone time and money, according to Kim Boyd, invasive species and biological resources program manager for Tahoe RCD.
Annual watercraft inspection fees range from $35 for personal watercraft and vessels under 17 feet up to $121 for vessels over 39 feet.
The annual “Tahoe Only” sticker fee remains unchanged from 2011. An additional fee of $25 is being charged for any boat requiring decontamination.

LAKEPORT, Calif. – The temperatures were perfect for an exciting night of family entertainment at Lakeport Speedway this last weekend and those in attendance were left on the edge of their seat for the entire night.
The night saw the return of the young guys in the Bandoleros with the fast time, heat and main event win going to Colby Furia and the trophy dash going to Kolby Berry.
The action with the youth continued as the teens battled it out in the Legend cars with the battle during the main event between Luis Tyrell and Jeremy Doss.
During a midrace caution that led to a lengthy clean up the two drivers sat in the middle of turn number three and four and gave each other a hard time about the night events, to go on and complete the show in a spectacular fashion with the win going to Tyrell.
The Extreme Asphalt Outlaws made their debut with all the drivers gunning for the 2011 Champion Charlie Collins.
The fast time for the night was set by Kyle Telstrom who went on to take the checkers in the main event over Sean Sweeney of Kelseyville.
In the Taco Bell Bomber division after a few laps it saw the two rookies of Sierra Furia and Terry Allen Jr. started on the front row and put on one heck of a battle for the lead.
They jockeyed back and forth until a midrace incident with contact on the back straight that sent the 37 car hard into the outside wall and retired Allen’s car as well.
After the clean up the restart saw veterans on the front row and after the remaining battle the car driven by Mike Collins saw the checkered flag.
In the Jammer division we saw a first time winner in the Jr. Division with Jason Hunter driving the Kelseyville Lions sponsored car to victory lane and in the Pro divisions it was Wayne Young of Kelseyville taking the checkered flags over last week’s winner Scott Strugnell.
The action at Lakeport Speedway continues on Saturday, May 12, with the Jammer, Coors Light Modifieds, Extreme Asphalt Outlaws, Taco Bell Bombers, Bandoleros, Rental Solution Mini Stocks, and making a special appearance will be the BCRA Midgets.
It is going to be an action-packed event at the speedway for the Annual Founders cup event.
This weekend on Sunday, May 6, the racing continues at Delbert’s Memorial Speedway with the opening day of racing for the go-karts with the track being located behind Raul’s Garage by UCC Rentals on South Main Street.
Gates open at 10 a.m. with racing starting at 1 p.m. Grandstand pricing will be as follows: adults, $8; seniors, $6; students ages 12-17, $4; children age 6 to 11, $2; family pass of two adults and three kids $18; and kids under age 6 may attend for free.
