ARBUCKLE, Calif. – A Colusa County supervisor is joining the race for the newly redrawn Third Congressional District, in which part of Lake County will be included.
Supervisor Kim Dolbow Vann filed paperwork this week with the Federal Election Commission to run for the House of Representatives, according to a Thursday statement.
“The dysfunction in Washington, D.C. is preventing economic recovery,” said Vann. “We need voices of reason with real-world business experience. I’ve created jobs in the private sector, fought against regulatory hurdles that prevent job growth and helped bring higher education to a rural area. While Washington has consumed itself with petty infighting, I’ve been focused on finding solutions.”
A fourth-generation family farmer in Northern California, Vann put her experience with business and agriculture to work right out of college, helping small farmers export their products through the World Trade Center in San Diego.
Since then, she has worked as a legislative advisor in county government, as senior advisor to former Congressman Doug Ose and for the past eight years as a successful businesswoman, breaking down regulatory barriers to economic development.
“This district faces very real policy issues that need a champion. Unemployment is as high as 20 percent,” Vann said. “In the coming years, Congress will be voting on a Farm Bill, we’ll see another round of base closures and we are slowly but steadily losing our water supply to Southern California. As a member of Congress, I’ll keep up my fight to reduce the regulatory roadblocks on job growth, I’ll fight to protect Travis and Beale Air Force Bases, and I’ll fight to protect our agricultural economy and our water rights.”
First elected to the Board of Supervisors in 2006, Vann has established her reputation as a tireless advocate for protecting local government. She is the incoming chair of the Regional Council of Rural Counties, representing more than 30 small and rural counties throughout the state, including Lake. She also serves as vice chair of the Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee for the California State Association of Counties.
A graduate of California State University, San Marcos, Kim lives in Arbuckle with her husband, Jim, and their 8-year-old son, Asa.
Adopted by the state’s redistricting commission this week, the sprawling new Third Congressional District includes Colusa County, and parts of Glenn, Lake, Sutter, Yuba, Sacramento, Solano and Yolo counties.
The district covers some of the most productive farmland in the state and is home to some of the most important business centers, educational institutions, national security facilities and nature preserves in the nation.
Vann has already secured the endorsement of political leaders Congressman Wally Herger, Congressman Jeff Denham, former Congressman Doug Ose, state Senator Doug LaMalfa, state Assemblyman Jim Nielsen, and dozens of business leaders and local elected officials.
She said she will make a formal announcement about the race in early September.
