Yuba Community College to host Dec. 8 redistricting forum

CLEARLAKE, Calif. – Yuba Community College District is planning a forum this week to introduce community members to proposed new boundaries for trustee areas.

The meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, in room 603 at Yuba College’s Clear Lake Campus, 15880 Dam Road Extension, Clearlake.

California Education Code requires each California community college district that elects its board of trustees “by trustee area” to adjust its trustee area plan in a process that follows the completion of the US Census, district officials reported.

That boundary adjustment process is meant to ensure that each resident of a district has equal representation. It’s similar to redistricting that took place earlier this year for seats in Congress, the California Legislature and local government bodies, such as the Board of Supervisors.

The Yuba Community College District is transitioning from a system where four districts elect seven trustees to one in which seven districts each elect a single trustee, the district reported.

College documents indicate that the plan for modifying the four districts begins with a population adjustment. It will then divide the districts that currently elect two members along main streets, and school district and city boundaries wherever it is possible.

The Yuba Community College Board currently has eight members:

  • One student trustee;

  • District One, two members, representing areas including Marysville, Loma Rica, Linda, Beale Air Force Base and Olivehurst;

  • District Two, two members, representing areas including Yuba City, Sutter and Meridian;

  • District Three, two members, representing areas including Colusa, Dunnigan, Yolo and Woodland;

  • District Four, one member, representing areas including Williams, Elk Creek, Stonyford, Clearlake Oaks, Clearlake, Lower Lake, Cobb, Hidden Valley Lake and Middletown.

A new redistricting proposal would break the existing Districts One and Two into Districts One, Two, Three and Four; existing District Three into Districts Five and Six; and the current District Four, which includes a portion of eastern and southern Lake County, into a new District Seven.

Maps of the current boundaries and proposed new boundaries can be viewed below. The proposed map is not final.

The Yuba Community College District Board of Trustees believes that public input is necessary for the redistricting process to be a success, and encourages community members to come and participate in the process, and share concerns and comments on the plan.
