Groups to submit signatures for medical marijuana cultivation initiative

LAKEPORT, Calif. – Two marijuana activist groups said they will submit signatures to the Lake County Clerk on Tuesday in support of a proposed ballot initiative that supports medical marijuana cultivation.

Lake County Citizens for Responsible Regulations and Lake County Green Farmers Association reported that they completed the signature gathering effort for the “Lake County Medical Marijuana Cultivation Act of 2012,” which they hope to see placed on the June 2012 ballot.

The groups said they intend to submit the signatures on Tuesday morning in Lakeport.

In total they said they have gathered 3,283 signatures, well above the 2,115 signatures needed to qualify for the June ballot.

Lake County Registrar of Voters Diane Fridley reported that a referendum petition the group circulated this fall against the county's medical marijuana cultivation ordinance qualified for the June 2012 ballot.

The Board of Supervisors is set to discuss that development, and decide whether to overturn its ordinance or allow the cultivation referendum to move forward to the ballot, at its meeting Jan. 3, Fridley said.
