Correctional staff honored nationally this week

LAKE COUNTY – The thousands of correctional and detention facilities housing prisoners and detainees throughout the nation represents a crucial component of our criminal justice system, and the individuals who help run those institutions are being recognized this week.

The Congress and the President of the United States have designated the week of May 4 through May 10th, 2008, as National Correctional Officers’ Week, according to Chief Deputy James Bauman of the Lake County Sheriff's Office.

In conjunction with this national observance, the Lake County Board of Supervisors will proclaim this same week as National Correctional Officers’ Week in Lake County on Tuesday, May 6.

Few groups of Americans have a more difficult or less publicly visible job than the correctional officers and other public servants working in such facilities, reported Bauman.

The men and women staffing the nation’s jails and prisons are not only responsible for ensuring the custody, control, and safety of detainees, but they are also charged with supervising the incarceration of criminal offenders and encouraging those offenders to develop skills and attitudes that can help them become productive members of society after their release, Bauman reported.

Correctional staff must remain constantly vigilant to ensure their own safety and the safety of their colleagues, as well as the protection of inmates from the violence of other prisoners and at times, from inflicting harm on themselves, according to Bauman.

The significance of their duty to protect the rights of the public and safeguard the public from the offenders in their custody, he said, is equal only to the consequential charge of sustaining an uncompromised regard for the dignity, respect and constitutional rights of the imprisoned.

During this week and throughout the year, Bauman said the Lake County Sheriff's Office encourages all Lake County citizens to recognize the courage and commitment of the nation’s correctional officers who work under demanding circumstances and face danger in their daily lives, often sacrificing personal and family time to provide a necessary, but often thankless and unrecognized service to the public.
