LAKEPORT, Calif. – The Lakeport City Council this week will consider beginning the process of abating weeds on lots throughout the city and get a followup report from the chief of police on the city's July 4 celebration.
The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, in the council chambers at Lakeport City Hall, 225 Park St.
Community Development Director Kevin Ingram will take to the council a proposed resolution that would declare dry weeds, brush and similar vegetation that creates a fire hazard a public nuisance and direct staff to begin using administrative citation procedures to start the abatement process.
“As observed by the devastating impacts of the recent Valley and Clayton fire events, urban areas such as Lakeport are not immune from the destructive capabilities of wildland fires,” Ingram said in his report. “In an effort to reduce the risk of the occurrence of wildland fire within the community of Lakeport, staff from both the City and Lakeport Fire Protection District have been meeting over the past few weeks to develop procedures and solutions in order to gain better compliance from local property owners to remove and abate dry vegetation from vacant and larger lots throughout the City.”
Ingram said the fire district has provided the city with a list of properties that already have received abatement notices and not complied, with city staff visiting those properties last month.
Attached to the proposed resolution is a list of nearly 100 properties. With the council's direction, Ingram said city staff is prepared to issue notices to these property owners requiring the abatement of weeds within 10 days or an administrative citation with a $100 fine will be issued.
In other business, Police Chief Brad Rasmussen will present the 2016 Police After Action Report on the Independence Day fireworks operations.
Also on the Tuesday agenda, the city will present certificates of appreciation to sponsors of the city's annual National Night Out block party, which was held on Aug. 2.
The city also will present certificates of thanks to Bruno’s Shop Smart, the Lake County Chamber of Commerce and the Lakeport Main Street Association for those organization's fundraising campaigns to support the annual Lakeport July 4 fireworks display.
On the meeting's consent agenda – items considered noncontroversial and usually accepted as a slate on one vote – are ordinances; minutes of the Aug. 16 meeting; approval of Application 2016-023 with staff recommendations for the annual Sponsoring Survivorship Fun Walk/Run to take place Oct. 1; and rejection of claims by Vicki Jeffers and Gregg Thayer, as recommended by REMIF.
