LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – The four candidates in runoffs for the supervisorial seats have so far brought in $146,000 in their efforts to win seats on Nov. 8.
Candidates in the District 1 and 4 races submitted their last financial reports before election day on Oct. 27. That reporting period covers Sept. 25 through Oct. 22.
Both seats are open this year, as incumbent District 1 Supervisor Jim Comstock announced his plans to retire after two four-year terms, and Supervisor Anthony Farrington said he would not seek a fifth term on the board.
The District 1 runoff race between Monica Rosenthal and Jose “Moke” Simon III has brought in the most money, with those two candidates having raised more than $85,000 this year, and Rosenthal having brought in an additional $16,000 in 2015.
Altogether, Rosenthal has raised $47,219 this year, more than tripling the funds she has raised since the primary. That amount, combined with the $16,383 she raised in 2015, totals $63,602, making her the top fundraiser in all local races this year.
An analysis of her funding records shows that members of the North Coast winegrape industry are among her largest contributors, including the largest single contributor, Andy Beckstoffer, who gave $5,000 to her campaign. Another large contributor is the Los Angeles-based California Real Estate Political Action, Los Angeles, which has contributed $2,750.
Simon’s total to date is $37,997.80, close to three times his total at the primary.
In Simon’s case, his largest contributors have come from the casino industry – including the . California Nations Indian Gaming Association of Sacramento, which gave him $15,000, along with his own tribe, the Middletown Indian Rancheria, which contributed, $7,500.
Those and other donations bring his gaming-related contributions to $29,500, based on a review of his funding statements.
The District 4 race between Martin Scheel and Tina Scott has raised just under half of the amount raised by Rosenthal and Simon.
Just over $44,600 was reported by the District 4 candidates through the Oct. 27 reporting date, with both candidates more than doubling their fundraising since the June primary.
Scheel has raised a total of $20,235 to date. His biggest single contributor is the California Real Estate Political Action Committee, which gave him $2,750, the same amount the committee gave to Rosenthal.
Other key donations come from Meek Construction and from Scheel’s wife, Jennifer, who has contributed $1,675.
To date, Scott has raised approximately $24,442.14 in the race.
The largest single contributor to her campaign is her husband, Douglas, an electrical engineer, who has given $19,076.57 to the effort.
Farrington, whose seat she is seeking to fill, is her second-large contributor, and has given her a total of $2,676.57, of which $2,326.57 came from his campaign committee plus an additional $350 personal donation.
Besides support in the form of financing, each of the candidates has secured a number of key endorsements.
Rosenthal has received endorsements from Congressman Mike Thompson, Assemblyman Bill Dodd, State Board of Equalization Chair Fiona Ma, the Lake County Farm Bureau, the North Bay Association of Realtors, Clearlake City Councilman Bruno Sabatier, Board of Supervisors Chair Rob Brown, and retired county supervisors Ed Robey and Helen Whitney.
Scheel has been endorsed by Board of Supervisors Chair Rob Brown; Congressman Mike Thompson; Assemblyman Bill Dodd; Sheriff Brian Martin; Supervisor Jim Comstock; Tom Engstrom, Lakeport's retired police chief and a former city councilman; Lakeport City Council members Stacey Mattina, Kenny Parlet and Marc Spillman; Jim Comisky, president of the South Lake County Fire Protection District Board; the Lake County Deputy Sheriff's Association; and the UA Local 38 Committee on Political Education.
