CLEARLAKE, Calif. – The city of Clearlake is inviting applications from residents interested in serving on the citizen’s oversight committee for its newly passed sales tax measure.
Measure V in a one-cent specific tax that is anticipated to raise about $1.6 million annually to put toward road repair and improvement.
Voters in November approved the tax with a 68.8 percent supermajority, as Lake County News has reported.
On Thursday night, the Clearlake City Council certified the election results, including the passage of Measure V.
One of the important selling points for the measure was the requirement for a citizens oversight committee.
“The citizens oversight committee is a vital component of this measure. They will work with the council and city staff to make sure that the money is spent in full compliance with Measure V,” said Mayor Russ Perdock.
According to City Clerk Melissa Swanson, “Each individual council member can choose a representative for the committee and each of the council members has shown an interest in receiving applications from the public.”
Swanson said applications are available on the Measure V page of the city’s Web site, www.clearlake.ca.us , or at Clearlake City Hall, 14050 Olympic Drive.
In order to be eligible, a person must be a resident of the city of Clearlake and be able to commit to attending meetings on a monthly basis or more at a time to be decided by the committee.
Applications from interested persons are due back to the City Clerk no later than 5 p.m. Jan. 18.
The city council will make appointments to the committee at its Jan. 26 meeting.
“Measure V represents a significant turning point for the city of Clearlake in our ability to finally create some real improvements to the road infrastructure, as well as to the image of our city,” said City Manager Greg Folsom. “The citizens oversight committee is a critical part of the process in order to help ensure transparency and accountability to the taxpayers who entrusted us with this money.”
