LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – A day of heavy storms left parts of Lake County with more flooding and road closures, and facing still more rain ahead.
Lake County’s Friday storm, which combined rain and heavy winds, caused a new series of headaches, including more flooded roadways, and downed power lines and trees.
Clear Lake’s level, which had been inching downward during the drier conditions earlier this week, reached 9.84 feet Rumsey Friday afternoon before rolling back slightly to 9.67 feet Rumsey by early evening, the United States Geological Survey reported. Flood stage is 9 feet Rumsey.
Clear Lake is closed to motorized vessels while the lake remains in flood stage due to action taken on Tuesday by the Board of Supervisors, whose members voiced concern about damage from boat wakes to shoreline properties.
The Cache Creek Dam continues to let out water at a high rate, with 4,340 cubic feet per second being released Friday evening, according to the United State Geological Survey.
Because of the Clear Lake’s high water level, areas around Clear Lake remain under a flood warning issued by the National Weather Service, which on Friday also issued a flood watch that will be in effect from Sunday through Tuesday.
More rain and wind is forecast for the county over the next several days, with heavy rain expected on Sunday night and Monday morning, forecasters said.
Heavy rain around the region resulted on Friday in a closure of Highway 20 at the intersection of Highway 53 east of Clearlake Oaks. The highway is closed to eastbound traffic from Highway 53 to Highway 16, and just east of Highway 16 there is a hard closure in effect stretching to Williams, according to Caltrans.
In the city of Lakeport, numerous streets remained closed on Friday, as did Library Park, which was sustaining damage due to pounding waves breaching the park’s seawall.
Lakeport Police Chief Brad Rasmussen said the aquadam used to protect the park’s infrastructure had started to fail, so another temporary wall structure was installed, but it also was taking a beating.
Rasmussen said it was the wind action that was amplifying the impacts of the storm. That wind led to waves that were so powerful that they had come up into the park and knocked over the cement benches.
On Friday afternoon power lines were reported down on Lakeshore Boulevard just north of Park way in Lakeport. Fire and utility crews were dispatched to the scene, with the road closed down so they could work safely.
The Lake County Sheriff’s said it was unclear how long the repairs would take, and that it was expected that the area would be closed to traffic until at least midnight.
The high lake level had caused flooding in several areas along Lakeshore Boulevard within the city limits and in the unincorporated county in north Lakeport. Officials said the areas have been marked with barricades, and some have detours.
Motorists are asked to use special caution while traveling in the area as emergency responders and utility crews are at work making repairs.
Downed trees and mudslides also were reported around the county. On Friday afternoon, a mudslide had occurred east of Lucerne in the Pepperwood Cove area, with Caltrans responding to clear it. In the early evening, a tree was reported to have fallen on a home in Clearlake Oaks.
In addition to the closures on Highway 20 to Williams and Lakeshore Boulevard near Lakeport, numerous other local roadways either remain closed or were newly closed as a result of Friday’s storm.
The following list of road closures is compiled from information supplied by the California Highway Patrol, Caltrans, Lake County Department of Public Works, Lake County Sheriff’s Office, Lakeport Police and the Napa County Sheriff’s Office.
The information was updated as of 7:15 p.m. Friday.
