LAKEPORT, Calif. – The Board of Supervisors this week will once again consider an appeal for a Dollar General store project in Middletown and discuss the sheriff’s initial denial of permitting for a sprint boat race over concerns about liability.
The board will meet beginning at 9 a.m. Tuesday, April 18, in the board chambers on the first floor of the Lake County Courthouse, 255 N. Forbes St., Lakeport.
The meeting can be watched live on Channel 8 and online at http://www.co.lake.ca.us/Government/Boards/Board_of_Supervisors/calendar.htm . Accompanying board documents, the agenda and archived board meeting videos also are available at that link.
At 10 a.m., the board will consider an appeal filed by Texas-based Cross Development of the Lake County Planning Commission’s January denial of the mitigated negative declaration and design review for a major use permit for a Dollar General Store at 20900 Highway 29 in Middletown.
The Lake County Planning Commission had denied the project’s application for a major use permit last April, with the board granting an appeal of that decision in July, as Lake County News has reported.
Also on Tuesday, at 9:30 a.m. the board will hold a hearing to consider the appeal by Clear Lake Motorsports Enterprises of Sheriff Brian Martin’s denial of the application for the Lakeport Sprint Boat Grand Prix in Lakeport on June 2 to 4.
Martin’s April 5 letter to the event organizer Jack Long explained that, as of the letter’s date, Martin hadn’t received a permit application for the races. While Long received approval from the Lakeport City Council in February for approval of city property and staffing, Martin explained, “The County of Lake, not the City of Lakeport, is the government body that has jurisdiction and requires permitting under the Lake County Code for boat and ski races.”
Martin said he thinks the event will be positive for the community. “However, as a for-profit venture, it is my responsibility to ensure that tax-payer dollars are not used to subsidize it, and to ensure that the County’s liability interests are maintained.”
Martin is suggesting the board add several conditions for Long’s permit, primarily requiring that he fund additional sheriff’s staff that Martin said will be necessary during the event.
