LAKEPORT, Calif. – Of the seven rest stops which supplied food and beverages to the 710 riders in the Oct. 4 Konocti Challenge, Rest Stop No. 7, the Scotts Valley Women's Club garnered first place, with a price of $2,250.

The handful of club members transformed their clubhouse inside and out, into the “Emerald City,” complete with the Yellow Brick Road, the Great Oz, Somewhere Over the Rainbow, and the house that fell on one of the wicked witches.

The bicyclists visiting the clubhouse enjoyed the group's elaborate costumes.

This year there were 710 riders from nine states participating in the Lakeport Rotary-sponsored event, with half of the riders having never visited Lake County before.

Forty-one bicyclists – five of whom were under age 12 – rode 20 miles, while 155 bicyclists rode 40 miles, 334 bicyclists rode 65 miles and 180 bicyclists rode 100 miles.

The oldest rider was age 77 and rode the 100-mile route, while the youngest rider was age 7.

Next year’s ride will take place on Saturday, Oct. 3, so mark your calendars. Next year’s goal is 1,000 riders.
