Caltrans helps with American Indian cultural site preservation

NORTHERN CALIFORNIA – In this Caltrans News Flash, Caltrans works closely with Kashaya-Pomo leaders in Sonoma County to preserve the tribe’s land and heritage.

Over the years, winter storms and lack of public awareness have threatened the Kashaya Pomo’s ancestral lands where State Route 1 runs along the California Coast.

Caltrans and the tribal leaders developed a program that provides guidance to both highway maintenance workers and visitors.

The program received the prestigious Governor’s Award for Historic Preservation.
