Prescribed fire planned on Grindstone District Feb. 15

MENDOCINO NATIONAL FOREST, Calif. — Mendocino National Forest fire managers plan to conduct a prescribed burn as part of the 350-acre Grindstone Glade project on Thursday, Feb. 15.

The fire is a broadcast burns located northwest of Elk Creek.

Broadcast burning is when fire is applied generally to most or all of an area within well-defined boundaries to help remove hazardous fuels and reduce the potential for future severe wildfires.

The ignition of all projects is dependent on the availability of personnel and equipment, favorable weather, conditions that minimize smoke impacts as best as possible, and California Air Resources Board approval.

During operations on this prescribed fire, smoke may be noticeable from Interstate 5 but is not expected to affect communities.

Burns are conducted within a “prescription” that is determined by appropriate fuel moisture, temperature, humidity, wind and ventilation.

Fire crews implement, monitor, and patrol each project to ensure it meets the goals and objectives outlined in the prescribed burn plans.
