Mediation seminar to be offered in Lakeport April 28

LAKEPORT, Calif. – A seminar focused on mediation techniques, sponsored by Lake County Mediations and the Lake County Bar Association, will take place on Saturday, April 28.

The seminar will be held at the Lake County Courthouse, 255 N. Forbes in from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The speakers will be A. Marko Turk and Kathryn Turk from Santa Monica.

A. Marco Turk, emeritus professor and former director of the Negotiation, Conflict Resolution and Peacebuilding Program at California State University Dominguez Hills and adjunct professor of law at the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution at Pepperdine University School of Law, will lead the session on the use of mindfulness by lawyers and mediators to achieve positive outcomes in mediation.

Professor Turk is internationally recognized for his work as a U.S. Fulbright Senior Scholar in conflict resolution on the eastern Mediterranean island of Cyprus in the late 1990s and in his continuing work peacebuilding work there and among Cypriots residing in the USA.

He is a recognized scholar and practitioner concerning the ethnic and identity-based conflict commonly referred to as the “Cyprus Problem.”

Kathryn Turk is a mediation professional and instructor in the Cal State University Dominguez Hills program for Negotiation, Conflict Resolution and Peacebuilding. She has also managed the Center of Civic Mediation (the community mediation program for the western half of Los Angeles) and is active in training and mentoring mediators.

Her current focus is on training youth in the “art of negotiation.” Ms. Turk will lead a segment on the effective use of the mediation "intake" process to improve opportunities for settlement.

The seminar has been designed for individuals with prior training or experience as volunteer or professional mediators and for attorneys who participate in mediation or settlement negotiations as part of their legal practice.

Attorneys will be granted mandatory continuing legal education credits for their attendance including one hour of the required competence training.

The cost is $30 for the day or $40 with lunch.
