CLEARLAKE, Calif. – On Saturday April 14, more than 50 long-term caregivers will meet at the Best Western El Grande Inn in Clearlake to participate in SEIU Local 2015’s Democracy School’s program – a program to teach long-term caregivers and their consumers about how the political process works and the skills they need to affect change.
In addition to the long-term caregivers, SEIU’s president and executive vice presidents will be in attendance.
Political decisions affect the lives of every California and long term caregivers are uniquely positioned to advocate for society’s most vulnerable – the elderly and those with disabilities.
In fact, half of older adults need assistance with their daily activities and need long-term care. With the senior population expected to double in California in the next 12 years, the perspective of long-term caregivers is needed now, more than ever.
The training will cover civics 101, the importance of electoral participation, and how to use innovative election technology.
Graduates of the school will become democracy captains, responsible for organizing other long-term care providers in their communities throughout Northern California.
