Caltrans releases San Francisco Bay Area bike plan

NORTHERN CALIFORNIA – The Caltrans District 4 Bike Plan for the San Francisco Bay Area is now available to the public.

The final report, which summarizes the development of the plan and highlights key findings, along with a Web map of priority improvements, are now available at www.dot.ca.gov/d4/bikeplan.

This plan – the first of its kind in the state – builds on the “California State Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan, Toward an Active California,” which identifies goals, objectives, and strategies to support walking and biking in California.

This district-level pan evaluates bicycle needs on and across the State transportation network in the Bay Area and identifies priority improvements for bicycling.

Many of the improvements identified in the plan are conceptual and will require further study and coordination with local jurisdictions and stakeholders.

The plan will be updated regularly as future needs and opportunities are identified and evaluated.

Caltrans said this document will guide District 4 and its partners to develop an integrated bicycle network for the Bay Area.

Community and stakeholder engagement played a central role in the development of the plan to ensure that proposed improvements are consistent with local efforts and reflect community interests, Caltrans reported.
