The theme for the day is “There is hope for recovery in a community that supports one another,” and is sponsored by LARCA Fire Relief, Adventist Health Clear Lake, North Coast Opportunities, the Sierra Club Lake Group, Robinson Rancheria, Dennis Smith and Bonnie Cobbs.
The event is Saturday, August 17, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Highlands Springs Park and Recreation Area, 3600 Highlands Springs Road, Lakeport and includes an early morning hike around the lake, swimming, picnicking and an ice cream social.
The event is free and open to the public and all are welcome to attend whether participating in one or all of the planned activities for the day.
The Community Day of HOPE begins with a self-led hike around Highlands Springs Reservoir at 8 a.m. The hike starts at the picnic area and community members are welcome to hike any portion of the Lake Trail, which is about four miles total.
The Highland Springs area is characterized by scrub brush, oak woodland and open range land. The trail is moderately hilly, and offers views of Mt. Konocti.
Hikers are encouraged to wear sturdy shoes and bring sunblock, a sun hat and a reusable water bottle. Water and snacks will be provided at two aid stations along the route. Poison oak and snakes are common in this area. Hike participants will receive their choice of a free water bottle or t-shirt while supplies last.
Swimming at the picnic area is open any time and swimmers are encouraged to bring water shoes, sunblock and a towel. There is no lifeguard on duty at the reservoir. There will also be fun outdoor activities including hula hoops and art projects on the lawn throughout the day.
Attendees will need to bring their own lunch for the community picnic at noon in the picnic area under the trees. Some tables, chairs and blankets will be provided, but people are encouraged to bring their own. Water and snacks will be provided.
The ice cream social begins at 1 p.m. and various flavors of ice cream from Scoops in Kelseyville along with fun toppings will be served.
The free raffle give away includes t-shirts and water bottles, gift certificates to local ice cream shops, Lake County Fair entry tickets for a family of four plus two Passport to Fun passes, 72-hour emergency go kits, and four hours worth of landscape services by a People Services landscape crew to help prepare for fire season.
The “Banner of HOPE,” initiated at the Lake FRC's Cal HOPE Hike of HOPE earlier this year, will be on display and available to sign. The banner is displayed at various locations throughout Lake County.
