Gov. Newsom honors Cal Fire captain killed in Merced County wreck

Gov. Gavin Newsom on Wednesday honored Cal Fire Capt. Paul Rotondaro, who died in a wreck earlier in the day.

“Jennifer and I were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Fire Capt. Paul Rotondaro, a man who dedicated his life to protecting his fellow Californians. We extend our deepest condolences to his wife and children, family, friends, and colleagues. His contribution to his community will not be forgotten,” Gov. Newsom said.

Captain Rotondaro, 36, was killed in a traffic accident early Wednesday morning on Highway 140 in Merced County.

He began his career at Cal Fire in 2006 and served in the areas of Madera, Mariposa and Merced.

Capt. Rotondaro grew up in Merced County and was proud to help protect the county he lived in.

Captain Rotondaro is survived by his wife, Jennifer; 13-year-old daughter, Kiersten; and 16-month-old son, Wyatt.

In honor of Captain Rotondaro, Capitol flags will be flown at half-staff.
