Start of new CalFresh time limit work rule delayed

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – A federal change to the CalFresh Program was scheduled to take place effective April 1, 2020.

CalFresh recipients who were Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents, or ABAWD, living in Lake County would need to work or be excused from working in order to get CalFresh for more than three full countable months between April 1, 2020, and Dec. 31, 2022.

California along with several other states filed a lawsuit to stop implementation of the ABAWD work rule.

On Friday, March 13, a preliminary nationwide injunction was granted stopping the implementation, at least temporarily, of the ABAWD work rule.

At this time, there is no information on how long this injunction will be in place.

In addition, the federal Families First Coronavirus Response Act (H.R. 6201), which passed the House and is set to be heard in the Senate, may temporarily halt the ABAWD work rule, but this bill has not yet been signed into law.
