Helms: Supporting Alvord, Buffalo and Hanson for Lakeport Unified School Board

My wife and I have had the pleasure of raising four children in the Lakeport area over the last 22 years.

All four children attended the Lakeport Unified School District through at least eighth grade.

It was during the 2016-2017 academic year when my youngest child, an eighth grader at the time, was involved in a physical altercation in which he was injured.

He was approached from behind and slammed to the ground; he received a broken radius and ulna. He also sustained a serious head injury.

The punishment for the student that injured him was only a two- or three-day suspension.

The lack of consequences in this situation is an open invitation for future assaults.

There were numerous documented incidents at this school district during the 2016-2017 school year.

This school has become a much more dangerous place; I would never again send my child through the Lakeport Unified School District, as discipline follows policy, and it is clear that policy is not being implemented by the individuals responsible for the safety of our children.

This school district needs people who will emphasize discipline and consequences, as well as the pursuit of academic excellence.

I therefore recommend Carly Alvord, Dan Buffalo, and Jen Hanson as board members for the Lakeport Unified School District.

Wiars: Repopulate and open the Northshore

Indications are the Ranch Fire is moving on to the east, the wind has been blowing from the west and it is forecast to continue blowing from a westerly direction.

On Monday morning, LakeCoNews posted a video that Clearlake Oaks and Glenhaven are unscathed.

On behalf of all the frustrated and evacuated residents of the Northshore, I am demanding that Sheriff Martin, Cal Fire and the Board of Supervisors immediately repopulate the Northshore area and completely open Highway 20.

Yes, we all know there are active fire zones in the area. If citizens want to stay away a little longer, that should be their choice.

For the rest of us, let us go home and get back to work.

Humphrey: Upper Lake Women’s Protective Club thanks Butchers for support

The Upper Lake Women’s Protective Club would like to thank the Butchers for their generous support of our organization.

On Sunday, July 15, we held our second annual ice cream social on the patio between the Tallman Hotel and the Blue Wing Saloon.

The Butchers not only let us use their beautiful patio beneath the big shade trees, but, also provided the ice cream as well as the wonderful wait staff.

This fundraiser has provided nearly enough to allow us to give two $500 scholarships to young women from the Upper Lake High School.

Again, a big thank you, Lynn and Bernie Butcher!

Sue Humphrey is secretary of the Upper Lake Women’s Protective Club, serving Upper Lake, Calif.
