The speaker will be Anita Crabtree of the Lake County Genealogical Society. She will tell the fascinating story of “The connection between Lake County and Daytona Beach, Florida.”

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – “The Law Show” on KPFZ 88.1 FM will host the widow of a young soldier who died last month in Iraq.

The show will air from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 12.

Host Herb Gura will speak with Adele Shapiro, wife of Steven Shapiro, the 29-year-old soldier from Hidden Valley Lake who was killed in Iraq on Oct. 21, the day President Obama announced the troops will be coming home.

They will talk about Shapiro and his sacrifice, what now for his wife and their infant son, and the war that cost Shapiro his life.

The program will provide such home modifications as wheelchair ramps, widening doorways, bathroom accommodations for mobility improvements, and other accessibility issues that might be needed.

The post is helping veterans and the families of veterans who are in need this coming Christmas by providing a turkey and all the fixings for making Christmas dinner.

In addition, the post will help with presents such as winter coats, hoodies, boots or shoes, and toys for the children of the families.

This is the fourth year that the post has been able to provide this program because of the help of donations though their yard sales and fundraisers.

Last year the post was able to help 60 families and this year, because of the economy, they plan on helping 80 to 100 families.

If you are a veteran of a foreign war and would like to help the post with local projects like this join them at their monthly dinner and meeting, which will be this Monday, Nov. 14, 6 p.m. at the Lakeport Senior Center, 427 Konocti Ave.

The workshop will be held Thursday, Nov. 17, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Agricultural Center, 882 Lakeport Blvd., Lakeport (a wheelchair accessible facility).

A $5 donation is requested to cover written materials.

Workshop presenters will be UCCE Pomology Farm Advisor Rachel Elkins and UC Master Gardener Gabriele O’Neill.

Topics will include fruit tree selection, planting, training, maintenance, and pest management for backyard trees and noncommercial home orchards.

Samples of recipes from the newly released Master Gardener Cookbook, “Cooking with the Seasons – A Collection of Recipes” will be available to taste and the cookbook will be available to purchase for $13.
