KELSEYVILLE, Calif. — The Ely Stage Stop will host the next segment in its “Popcorn Lecture Series” at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 10.

The presentation, titled “May 10: 20,000 Years of Cultural Change and Stability in Lake County,” will be given by Dr. John Parker.

Dr. Parker will take you on a “hands-on” journey through 20,000 years of Lake County prehistory; from the earliest known stone tools till the arrival of Europeans in the area.

Based on local archaeological research, he will talk about how the Pomo people were able to adjust their technology and community organization to deal with the last Ice Age, the last global warming period, volcanic eruptions and periods of overpopulation.

Through it all, the local indigenous people gained an amazing amount of knowledge about Lake County's plants, animals, and yearly cycle of change. Knowledge that they still hold and use today.

Learn about Lake County’s past while munching on popcorn in the Ely Museum’s Red Barn, 9921 Soda Bay Road, Kelseyville.

Lectures are every-other month on the second Saturday. Talks begin at 2 p.m.

Lectures are free to Historical Society members or $10 at the door for non-members. Join as a member at the door and get into all six 2025 lectures free.

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. — Clearlake Bassmasters and the Lake County Sheriff’s Activities League will offer a free fishing clinic for students ages 6 to 18.

Eighteen year olds must still be in high school to participate.

There are just 20 slots available for this fun activity so register early.

The clinic will be held on Saturday, May 17, at Library Park on Park Street in Lakeport from 9 a.m. to noon with a hot dog feed at the end of the session.

The activity will take place in two parts.

At 9 a.m. the Bassmaster volunteers will provide instruction on a variety of fishing skills and techniques.

Part two of the day involves supervised fishing from the pier. All equipment and supplies are provided including life vests for those fishing from the pier. If your student is 16 to 18 years old, they must acquire a fishing license before the clinic and bring it with them in order to fish from the pier.

Beginning April 15, you may register your child by contacting and speaking directly to Lake County Sheriff’s Activities League Board Member Terry Norton at 707-349-4432. Signing up online is not possible.

The registration deadline is May 10th. Board member Mary Borjon, 707-279-1050, will handle registration from May 8 through May 10.

Registering your child reserves a space specifically for your child. Please ensure that your child attends.

After signing up, you will receive a follow up letter with important information and participation requirements.
