NORTH COAST, Calif. – The Redwood Region Logging Conference (RRLC) is pleased to announce their 2013 Forest Education Programs which are now available to local schools.

These programs are offered free to teachers for their classrooms by the RRLC to provide a positive learning environment about our forests and their endless cycle, while insuring a quality educational experience for all our local students and teachers.

The Logging Conference will be held in Eureka this year on March 14-16, 2013, however, many programs are still being offered to Mendocino County schools.

Teachers from kindergarten through eighth grade can sign up to participate in the mural contest, or request a resource professional (forester, wildlife or fisheries biologist, geologist, surveyor, etc.) to visit their classroom.

Classes that participate in the mural contest will compete for cash prizes and those classes not receiving a cash prize will receive a participation reward of $30.

The mural contest is being sponsored by Umpqua Bank. Visit the RRLC Web site at www.rrlc.net for details.

High school forestry students will have the opportunity to participate in the forestry competition during the week of the conference.

Also, Career Day will allow high school students to learn about the wide variety of opportunities the Forest Industry has to offer. Please call the office at 707-443-4091 for details on these events.

Interested teachers can visit the Web site at www.rrlc.net , click on Education Programs/Teacher Forest Education Programs/Mendocino for more information and application forms.

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – The Childcare Provider’s Association serves as a networking, educational and collaborative opportunity for Lake County’s family child care providers.

The association meets once every other month,  in different locations around Lake County to make it possible for all providers to participate in some way.

The association offers different topics of interest that may be helpful to providers such as: car seat safety updates, fire department demos on fire extinguishers, creative craft ideas, how to use Facebook to build your business, tours of family childcare homes and much more.

The next meeting will be on Monday, Nov. 26, at 7 p.m. at 1950 Parallel Drive in Lakeport.

Easter Seals will be demonstrating infant massage techniques and will share the Child Find program with family child care providers needing resources to support families with children who may be experiencing developmental delays.

They also will train providers on using the Ages & Stages questionnaires to plan activities to meet the needs of children in family child care programs. It is another tool providers can use to make sure children birth to 5 years are on track and ready to enter school.

To register for the Nov. 26 training or find out more information regarding the Childcare Provider’s Association, please contact Liberty Perry at 707-987-2515.

The Carlé community would like to welcome new student Billy Martin.

Student of the Week this week was Timothy McGuire. Tim is one of the most loved students on the Carlé campus. Tim is a very hard working and intelligent student who shows up every day and has been a positive role model for all those around him.

Mug contest update: there is only two weeks left for everyone to get his or her designs into the media classes. The winners of the mug contest will receive free mugs produced from their designs by the members of the media class and will also be featured in the chronicle.

Speaking of designers, we’d like to congratulate our top designers here at Carlé. Nura Brown has been named head designer this year at the school. In addition, Lance Thurston, Mayra Pantoja and Junior Garcia have been designated as lead designers.

The Environmental Detectives Unit is coming to a close this year at Carlé. This is a key project for our portfolios. An approved report by our science teacher Angie Siegel qualifies as the problem solving portion of the portfolios.

Student government for the 2012-13 year of school has been officially elected by each of our advisories.

The following students are the representatives for each advisory class:

  • Alan's: Mayra Pantoja and Jesse Harrell;
  • Angie's: Levi Venuto and Nura Brown;
  • Mr. Maes': Summer Gunn and Andrew Subjack;
  • Steve's: Dane Pearson and Charles Trujillo;
  • Ms. Shrive's: Marla Mitchell and Michael Field.

The alternates for the student council are James Paul Harvey, Tyler Rose, Cari Wiebusch and Billy Martin.

Ms. Shrive will serve as the faculty advisor for the student council for this school year.

Finally, New Vintage productions is currently putting on the show “The Importance of Being Earnest,” and it is a wonderfully funny show. Those of you that love word play you'll certainly love this classic written by Oscar Wilde.

Their first weekend has already gone by but you can still make it this next weekend.

Date and times are 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, and Saturday, Nov. 10, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11. Tickets are $15 dollars each. I encourage you to go out and enjoy a genuine theater experience right here in Lower Lake at the Weaver.

For information call John Tomlinson, the founder and artistic director at 707-355-2211 or 707-355-2272 for Barbara Clark the marketing manager.

Carlé Chronicle: College classes and pink flamingos

On Thursday, Nov. 1, there will be no school here at Carlé. So all of you going out on Halloween can have a day of rest!

For those students interested in early college life or starting college life, teacher Robin Shrive and Yuba counselor Pamela Bordisso are helping students to find out all of their options for going to college.

Pamela recently came to do an overview about Yuba College and talked about concurrent enrollment.

Concurrent enrollment, if you did not know, is when a high school student takes college classes while still remaining in high school.

Concurrent enrollment is an inexpensive way of furthering your education and getting on a fast track for college.

Ms. Shrive is the person to talk to about college or concurrent enrollment. In addition, Shrive's alternative P.E. class, yoga and strength training, is open to every student during our sixth period.

Last week when this article listed the Gold Level members of the school it forgot to mention Carlé student Lance Thurston who also had made Gold level.

Student of the Week this week is Kobi Minard. Kobi is a hardworking and funny young man and we here at Carlé think very highly of his fine example of a focused and positive student.

Usually when a student receives student of the week they are given a certificate for one free pizza from DJ’s Pizza (who we truly thank and are in the process of making all sorts of thank you presents in our media classes).

Starting this week with Kobi we will be giving out a new privilege. Along with the free pizza pass, students who receive this weekly award now also will be granted a front of the lunch line pass for an entire week. This was an idea brought over to Carlé by Dr. Burger from his last school.

Heads up to all Carlé students: the Carlé Interact Club is helping in a pink flamingo charity event. What this means is that the club will be going around planting flamingos in front of Rotary Club members' houses as a fun prank.

Members of Interact Club will be going late at night or early morning to plant 30 pink, plastic nightmares; "you've been 'flocked'” is the official tagline.

In order to remove them the Rotary Club members must pay $35 at a Rotary meeting. If someone were to pay $40, they’d be able to move the flamingos to another Rotary member’s house.

Carlé interact members must go out to find these homes to participate in this event. All of the proceeds go to the Safe House of Lake County.

Upcoming Interact Club events are the Christmas dinner on Dec. 8 and the seafood broil next Feb. 23.

The list of current student members: Nura Brown, Constance Hazelwood and Jesse Harrell. We expect many more students to join this club in the coming weeks.

The club is hosted by Rotary members Kineen Barzai and former Carlé principal and retired Konocti Unified Superintendent Dr. Bill MacDougall.

Interact Club is open to everybody and is a very good way to earn community service hours or extra credit, all while helping out your community. Please come and join us because it’s a lot of fun.

Jesse Harrell is a student at Carlé Continuation High School in Lower Lake, Calif.
