Carle Chronicle: Season's greetings from the students

Details

Season's greetings from here at Carlé!

First up, we would like to welcome our new students to the Carlé atmosphere. Kenneth Horton, Geneva Hudson, William McAllister, Deserae Shackleford, Amanda Tchamourian and Kinesha Wilson – we look forward to the great things you are going to produce.

Also, we would like to congratulate Jamila Parker and Marisa Tagle for both giving their senior portfolio presentations here in the next two weeks, and Shawna Griffith, Sarah Roath and Kristina Micheletti for graduating.

Paige Salvante also deserves the utmost congratulations for being the first student in Carlé history to organize and execute the first class for students and teachers alike. I was in attendance for this class, and it was extremely fun, informative, and went over without a hitch.

We¹d also like to thank Allen Markowski for helping our after school guitar program run so fluidly. We wouldn't be able to do it without him. We¹re very grateful for Tracy Skeen, principal of Cobb Mountain Elementary, and also Jessica and Marc Morita for giving students Faron Moran (who ran the technology of the presentation) and charismatic Marquice Lamar the opportunity to give a speech to elementary school kids.

This is the start of our third grading period, and also the start of the 2008 holiday season.

Every year we have our own white elephant celebration on the last day before winter break starts, where each student brings one gift to give to another, or to exchange with another. This is always a great, fun way to kick off the break.

The Carlé Interact Club helped the Rotary Club in serving more than 1,000 people free meals, and giving away 700 gifts, and we thank them for the opportunity to help, but more so for providing so much for the community. Those students involved were Alex Huff, Amy Reis, Chris Clark, Patrick Roberts, Jasmine Andrews and Stacey Fedewa.

In addition, the Carlé choir is performing at the Meadowwood senior center and Yuba Community

College on Dec. 12. We wish you happy holidays from here at Carlé!

Well, attending Carlé been by far one of the most amazing experiences I've ever lived through, and I'm going to miss it dearly. I've enjoyed writing these articles a lot, and I'm going to miss doing this too.

This is my farewell article, because I'm graduating on Dec. 19. Amanda Tchamourian is taking my place, and there couldn¹t be a better successor than her. Thank you for reading.

eScrip helps Middletown Middle School Parent Teacher Student Organization

MIDDLETOWN – With a $15 billion-plus California state budget deficit and a slow economy, the PTSO at Middletown Middle School wants to keep their program running at high speed without hurting anyone's wallet.

The volunteer group is asking the community to help out through a 100-percent free fundraiser. There is absolutely no cost to supporters yet it provides much needed funds for our school.

The eScrip program allows parents, friends and strangers the chance to give money to schools at no cost to themselves by registering grocery store loyalty cards, major credit cards and debit cards. When the registered cards are used at participating stores, a percentage of those sales go to the program you chose.

"It's really a very simple way to give money to your school at no cost to you," said Suzanne Riccio, a parent volunteer at MMS. "Everyone should be doing it--everyone in the community."

According to Riccio, many people are confused about the program and do not realize how easy and secure it is. She said by registering a card, subscribers give the companies permission to donate money to the schools.

The percentage of sales, typically between 1 and 5 percent, is donated by the company, not the individual shopper. Safeway is one of the largest supporters and every time you use your registered club card a percentage of your purchase is donated to our school.

For those who want to support Lake County schools but have multiple causes close to their heart, eScrip subscriptions can be split between up to three separate groups. These groups can be changed, added and dropped through your online account. Subscriptions need to be updated yearly in November.

In order to subscribe, visit escrip.com. Be sure to enter the correct organization(s). Middletown Middle School PTSO is #6624953.

More information about the program, including a list of participating merchants is available at the eScrip Web site.

If you would like to subscribe but do not have access to a computer, please call Suzanne Riccio at 987-9756 and she will get you a paper copy to sign up.

Another invigorating week on top of a lot of different projects coming to fruition was in store for us here at Carlé this week.

To start things off, we'd like to congratulate Jenna Ortega and Cheyenne Taylor for presenting their senior portfolios last week.

We'd also like to give a huge congratulations to Marquice Lamar, who just went on a trip down to San Diego, to receive the Region 4 award for “Every Student Succeeds.” This is the first time a student from Lake County has received this award.

Marquice also had some first times himself. While down there with Principal Ed Zander Marquice hit the beach, ate sushi, rode the trains down there and then hopped on a plane to get home, all things that were completely new to him. Everyone in attendance completely agreed that he was a complete gentleman, being absolutely respectful, kind, and very gregarious.

In other school-related news, the after school guitar program has been going fluidly, and more people are signing up. New student Christian Clark is inspiring more and more people to pick up guitar (or to just start writing music) with his own amazing guitar playing.

We're also ecstatic that the Lower Lake Park has officially been dedicated to Russell Ristici, by a unanimous vote by the Board of Supervisors. He was an amazing man, as well as one of the main benefactors of Carlé High School. He is greatly missed.

Last Friday was also Frank and Anna McAtee Day. Frank and Anna, who donated to Carlé after we volunteered at this year's bluegrass festival event, came to our school, where they were presented with tokens of our gratitude made by our student business, and were served a delicious meal by our own culinary geniuses, Kristina Micheletti, and Marisa Tagle.

We are extremely grateful for Frank and Anna's generosity every year, and this is just a small example of our true appreciation to these wonderful people.

Next week is Thanksgiving break so we will see you all the week after.
