LAKEPORT – California Garden Clubs Inc. presents a Smokey Bear Poster Contest each year.
Clear Lake Trowel and Trellis Garden Club member and art instructor, Pat Hopper, teaches an art class to Marilyn Guether's second grade class at the Lakeport Elementary School. She was assisted by President Claire Grieve.
A first, second and third place poster of the Smokey Bear Contest will be chosen. Then first place winner will be sent on to compete at the district, then state, and then national levels.

Students can apply online at MOAA’s Web site for the loans, which are awarded annually for up to five years of undergraduate study.
Students under age 24, who are children of former, active or retired officers, or active or retired enlisted military personnel, are eligible to apply.
Active duty, retired, Reserve, and National Guard officers and warrant officers of the seven uniformed services are eligible for MOAA membership.
If a child served in a uniformed service before completing college, however, his or her maximum age for eligibility will be increased by the number of years he or she served, up to five years. Applicants may be graduating high school seniors or full-time college students working toward their first undergraduate degree.
Qualified students with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale are considered for selection based on their scholastic ability, potential, participation in extracurricular and community activities, as well as financial need.
“For more than 60 years, our educational assistance programs have assisted military families in meeting the challenge of paying for college,” says Laurie Wavering, program manager of the Educational Assistance Program.
In addition to the more than 1,600 interest free-free loans, MOAA will award 19 grants to college seniors who are current loan recipients in the Program, eight grants to children of deceased retired officers and at least 50 grants to children whose military parent died in active service. All of the 19 senior grants will be for at least $5,000 each. Also, 793 of those receiving the interest-free loan are Designated Scholars who receive a $5,000 interest-free loan and a $500 grant.
A designated scholarship is a permanent named grant that will continue in perpetuity. Each year both a grant and an interest-free loan are awarded in honor of the loved one, friend, or colleague designated by the donor.
The MOAA Scholarship Fund has given nearly 10,000 students interest-free loans totaling more than $71.2million since its inception in 1948.

One of them is our former writer Bryan Layne who will be officially graduating on Dec. 18. I, Amanda Tchamourian, will be taking his place as the journalist at Carlé.
We would also like to congratulate Faron Moran and Alex Huff, who have been a big help in the media room. Also to graduate soon will be Justin Duncan, Marisa Tagle, Sarah Roath and Kristina Micheletti. We wish you all good luck in all of life's endeavors.
To top off the holiday seasons, Carlé High has also been helping in community service, and a lot of it.
We would like to thank students Jonathan Hill and Marquice Lamar who have helped the Lake County Community Action Agency by assembling food baskets on Monday, Dec. 15.
Ben Sheridan, Bryan Layne, Kayla Mincey, Leana Efestione, Chris Clark and Mike Tellez have signed up for the following Thursday, and Marquice Lamar, Kaitlyn Schneider, Kayla Mincey, Brianna Giambra and Brooke Robb will go Friday to help continue the 650 baskets that will be made from
the $2,000 of donations.
Carlé's recycling club also has taken in a new member, Geneva Hudson. We thank her for being a big help to Carlé.
On Wednesday, Dec. 17, Dr. Heidi Morgan led the Carlé choir – Dylan Sheldon, Amanda Tchamourian, Kaitlyn Schneider, Jamila Parker, Jah-Brela Parker, Dan Maes, Kodi Burr, Geneva Hudson, and Brooke Robb – around to carol for the MeadowBrook Rest Center. Once again, thanks for all the help Carlé
students.
To celebrate these season greetings, Carlé held a white elephant gift exchange on Dec. 19. Each student is going to bring one gift for some random student to open up. They better be careful what they pick because if the student next up likes their gift, they can steal it, and they will have to go pick another present. Everyone will receive a gift from someone in the school to start off the holidays.
Carlé wishes everyone happy holidays and a happy new year.

This annual competition always results in many colorful and creative entries and a daunting task for the contest judges.
This year’s entries were judged and put on display at the Christmas Light Parade held Saturday, Dec. 6, by the Jones & Lewis Memorial Chapel. Walmart generously donated a $10 dollar Gift Card for each of the following winners.
