Lake County Friends of Mendocino College meets Feb. 1

LAKEPORT, Calif. – The Lake County Friends of Mendocino College will hold a meeting on Thursday, Feb. 1.

The meeting will take place from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Lake Center, 2565 Parallel Drive.

Meetings are open to the public.

Debra Polak, interim vice president educational programs and student services, and dean of the center, will present an update on college activities and the status of a new director for the Lake Center.

There also will be financial updates, information on a scholarship application workshop and welcome week events, this summer’s Shakespeare at the Lake production of “As You Like It,” discussions on receptions for Lake County graduates of Mendocino College and adopted fifth graders, and announcements.

The governing council includes Wilda Shock, chairperson; Judy Conard, vice chair; Trena Pauly, treasurer. Members are Peggy Campbell, Courtny Conkle, Brock Falkenberg, Dave Geck, Jamey Gill, Lori McGuire, Lilia Powers, Cameron Reeves, Margaret Silveira, Richard Smith, Rebecca Southwick, Christopher Taliaferro and John Tomkins.

Mendocino College Lake Center to host Jan. 31 open house

LAKEPORT, Calif. – The Mendocino College Lake Center invites the community to a barbecue and open house marking the beginning of the new semester on Wednesday, Jan. 31.

The event will take place from noon to 1 p.m. in the Round Room.

All students, faculty and invited guests are welcome to come celebrate the beginning of a new school year and enjoy a delicious barbecue.

January marks the start of the sixth year of classes at the “new” Lake Center. Come out for a visit.

The college offers special thanks to the Lake County Friends of Mendocino College for their sponsorship the Kiwanis Club of Lakeport for assistance with the barbecue.

Santa Rosa group donates for Middletown school playground structure

MIDDLETOWN, Calif. – The Lake County International Charter School, or LCICS, would like to recognize the Active 20-30 Club of Santa Rosa No. 50 for its generous donation toward the construction of a playground structure.
 
“We have been diligently raising funds and working towards the purchase and construction of a playground structure,” said LCICS Director Gwendolyn Maupin-Ahern. “Our students and community have been through so much over the last two & a half years that we are especially grateful for the amazing generosity of the members of the Active 20-30 Club of Santa Rosa No. 50.”
 
LCICS has reached about 50 percent of its’ fundraising goal towards the completion of the long-awaited play structure.

Mendocino College to host mural dedication ceremony and open house

UKIAH, Calif. – Mendocino College invites the community to attend its mural dedication ceremony and open house for the First Year Institute, or FYI, College Assistance Migrant Program and Dreamer Resource Center on Wednesday, Jan. 31.

The event will take place from noon to 2 p.m. in MacMillan Hall Room 1200 on the Ukiah campus.

This free event will provide an opportunity for everyone to learn more about the services available at the center while enjoying the beautiful mural and reception.  

Guest speakers will include Mendocino College Superintendent/President Arturo Reyes and mural artist Daniel T. Lopez.  

A representative from Congressman Jared Huffman’s office will also be providing a special message to those in attendance.

This new center serves as a dedicated space where students can drop in, receive help, access computers and printers, participate in workshops and form connections with other students.

“Our new center is essential for our students as it provides a space to feel connected to the campus community and explore opportunities that lead to college success,” said Monica Flores, FYI and College Assistance Migrant Program manager.

The center, which is available to all Mendocino College students, also includes a social and study space where students can socialize and receive academic support in a warm and welcoming environment.

It is also a key component of the Hispanic Serving Institution, First Year Institute initiative.
