Upper Lake cross country parent/guardian meeting planned for Aug. 26

UPPER LAKE, Calif. – Parents, guardians, runners and supporters of the Upper Lake Cross Country running team are invited to attend the preseason parent/guardian, meeting on Monday, Aug. 26, at 6 p.m. in room 12 at Upper Lake High School.

The schedule, practices and season logistics will all be covered. It’s also a good time to meet the coaches.

Students who haven’t come out yet for the team still have time.

First official practices start on Monday, Aug. 19, at 3:30 p.m. or right after school. All runners meet in room 12.

All athletes need are a current sports physical and some proof of medical insurance.

Lots of meets are scheduled for the season and there’s lots of room for new beginning athletes.

Everyone who comes to practice makes the team. Everyone who’s on the team participates fully in all the meets. There is no bench or second string in cross country.

HVL Men’s Niners Golf Club holds first round of championships

HIDDEN VALLEY LAKE, Calif. – The HVL Men’s Niners Golf Club has held the first round of its 2013 Club Championships.

Sixty-one men competed in four flights. Champions will be crowned following next week’s play.

  • First flight: Don Herndon and Dave Mann tied for first with net 34. Bob Brossier was third with 35.
  • Second flight: Bill Helt, Mike Casolo and Al Burrows tied for the top spot at 33.
  • Third flight: Ned Munger was first, 33. Ron Clark and Ed Brooks tied for second, 34.
  • Fourth flight: Jim DeRosa posted the lowest net of the day, 32. Pete Gumina was second, 33 and Hal Weber was third, 34.

Closest to the par 3 pins were Cliff Hughes and Mike Henley.

Chip-ins were scored by Bob Chesnut, Jim DeRosa, Tommy Sowell and Bill Surber.

Middletown Pool closes for season

MIDDLETOWN, Calif. – Public Services Director Caroline Chavez announced that the Middletown Pool has closed for the summer season.

Due to the school year’s commencement, the pool's last open day was Sunday.

Hardester’s Market in Middletown generously donated free swim passes for children who are 12 years of age and under.

Chavez expressed her sincere appreciation to the Hardesters for their continued, unselfish support to the community.

Director Chavez and her Public Services staff thanks everyone who has assisted in making this swim season safe and successful.

Upper Lake High to host Sept. 7 Cougar Classic

UPPER LAKE, Calif. – The Cougar Classic at Upper Lake High School will take place on Saturday, Sept. 7.

The event will begin at 8 a.m.

After having to cancel the meet in 2012 due to heavy smoke from wildland fires, the Cougar Classic at Upper Lake High School is back for its sixth annual high school cross country race.

All high school cross-country teams in the empire are invited to this event.

There will be four races, starting at 8 a.m.: Girls JV, Boys JV, Girls Varsity and Boys Varsity.

Teams must fill varsity races with at least five runners before entering junior varsity runners.

The course is 2.07 miles, all flat and fast. It include 60 percent grass, 30 percent dirt and 10 percent pavement.

Entries are $10 per runner or $100 per team (whichever is less). Coaches, please bring check on race morning.

Meet t-shirts, which cost $7 each, will be available in a limited supply. (If anyone wants to pre-order t-shirts let coach Woods know in their entries.)

Distinctive awards are 10 deep in each race. Team awards include two places in each race.
