UKIAH – The Mendocino College football program had 11 student-athletes selected to the Bay Valley All-Conference Team.
The Eagles (8-2), who won the Bay Valley Conference and went undefeated in conference play, also received coach of the year and offense and defense player of the year honors.
Sophomore Jermaine Jacobs (Sacramento) had 34.5 total tackles and seven sacks and was selected as the conference defensive player of the year.
Freshman Jake Laudenslayer (Modesto), who accounted for 1,648 yards 18 touchdowns while playing both quarterback and receiver, was selected as the conference offensive player of the year.
Mendocino Head Coach Tom Gang was selected as the Bay Valley Coach of the year. Mendocino was Bay Valley Conference Co-Champions in 2005.
Along with the selection of Jacobs, Mendocino had four defensive players selected to the all-conference team.
Sophomore Gary Miller (Ukiah) and sophomore Markins Anilus (Miami) were selected as linebackers. Miller had 58.5 total tackles and four sacks, while Anilus had 36 tackles and 8.5 sacks.
Sophomore Mike Casper (Sacramento) is the lone defensive back selection. Casper had 35 total tackles and two interceptions.

Sophomore quarterback Cody Manguso (Reno, NV) threw for 1,878 yards and 21 touchdowns.

Freshman runningback Kevin Young (Windsor) rushed for 867 yards and 12 touchdowns.
“It is a tremendous honor to have the most players selected to the Bay Valley All-Conference team. This is a reflection of the work and time that has been put in by our staff and our players over the past year,” Gang said.
Mendocino will play Cabrillo College (6-4) in the Capital Shrine Bowl on Saturday, Nov. 24. Kick-off is set for noon at Hughes Stadium in Sacramento.

The crappie action has quickly become the top bite on the lake. Crappie season is one of my favorites because of the excitement and energy that such a good bite carries with it. The slabs are well on the minnow bite at many key locations – Kono Tayee, Konocti, Indian Beach, Jones and Jago Bays, and elsewhere.
A notable exception would be the coveted Four Poles location here in the Redbud Arm. Reports from there have not yet indicated a concentration of crappie. But the others … Fish to your heart’s content. Key colors in artificials are Albino Shad or Crystal Shad in the Panfish Assassin lures.
Bass action has slowed some for most folks trying to fool ‘em on artificials. However, the live bait (minnow) anglers have been having a good time. With changing temps (cooling) try various depths from shallow to deep and look for structure as you look for that bite.
The catfish bite has been steady. We’re not seeing huge fish as much as we are seeing plenty of fish. Shad and mackerel or live jumbo minnows have been the top baits. Most folks that are catching the whiskerfish have been doing so by boat, fishing locations throughout the south end of the lake.
This month’s CatFest in slated for Saturday, Nov. 24, just two days after Thanksgiving. Come and join us around 4 p.m. for a simple barbecue. We’ll be heading to Redbud Park around 6 p.m. to launch as a group. Our first destination is Jago Bay and then we’ll see what happens from there.
We’ll fish as a group – or flotilla, if you will – until we come back into the ramps at 11 p.m. The buy-in for the Biggest Catfish pool is $5. Barbecue is a $3 donation. Come by the shop and sign up in advance so we know how many mouths we’re feeding.

Bass pros are fishing swim baits to come up with big fish in the championship tournaments of most western tourney trails visiting our lake this time of year. BaitSmith, River2Sea and Osprey lures are all top sellers. Submerged rock piles and ledges are the patterns that are getting the most attention.
Most folks that aren’t on the tournament trail are fishing minnows this time of year. Why? Because this is the time of year when you can have an absolute ball fishing jumbo or extra-large minnows behind a split shot sinker and catch plenty of nice fish. Reports of 3- to 5-pound bass are plentiful when fished from 6 to 20 feet of water.
Crappie? Yep. In a few words, they’re in. Jones Bay and Jago Bay are both producing. Kono Tayee and the Glenhaven shoreline are producing. Some reports are coming from Konocti Harbor Resort & Spa that crappie are there, too. The bite at all locations is best in the early morning hours. Top bait … minnows. Jigs are effective, but minnows are producing more and bigger crappie as this season makes its start.
Catfish are coming in on shad and mackerel. Jumbo minnows are doing well also. I’ve heard several reports of a good bite on cats in Jago Bay. Drift fishing is especially effective this time of year because the winds are typically light. Catch a nice slow drift and you’re in business. Most folks fishing for cats are not leaving disappointed.
We’re hosting our regular CatFest event on Saturday, Nov. 24. We’ll kick it off here at the shop around 4 pm with a barbecue. Plan on hitting the water around 6 p.m. and fishing until 11 p.m. We’re asking for a $3 donation for the food and we’re offering a big cat pool with a $5 entry. The format for the event is simple. Come, fish, and have a good time. This is a non-contest event. We all fish the same area. Slowest boat leads the flotilla. We’ll launch together, fish together, and return to the ramps together. Drop by the shop to sign up for the event.
