LAKEPORT, Calif. – The Right Rev. Barry L. Beisner, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Northern California, will make his biannual official visitation to St. John's Episcopal Church in Lakeport on Sunday, Aug. 19.

At 10 a.m., Bishop Beisner will preach and celebrate Holy Eucharist as well as administer Confirmation, and reaffirm those who wish to renew their Baptismal Vows.

Also Fr. Leo M. Joseph O.S.F. will make a renewal of commitment to his vows as a Franciscan Friar for the past 38 years.

There is special organ music planned by the parish organist, Mel Taylor. He will be accompanied by Eleanor Cook on the violin for Christe du Lamm Gottes by JS Bach at the Offertory, and Mr. Taylor will also play JS Bach's Prelude and Fuge in B-flat as the Postlude.

The bishop will meet and talk with parishioners and friends of St. John's at the festive buffet which will be served in Carey Hall after church services.

SANTA ROSA, Calif. – Peter M. J. Hess, Ph.D., will give a presentation on “Teaching Science in a Climate of Controversy” on Sunday, July 1, in Santa Rosa.

The discussion will take place from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 1550 Pacific Ave., located three quarters of a mile east of the Santa Rosa Junior College Campus near Pacific Market.

Hess, a part-time Lake County resident, is director of religious community outreach with the National Center for Science Education, a nonprofit organization in Oakland that defends and promotes the teaching of evolution and climate science.

He will talk about his own commitment to this cause and relate some of his experiences.

Hess believes that at the heart of many attacks on science lies a questionable metaphysic of “human exceptionalism” – the common but unacknowledged assumption that Homo sapiens is exempt from biological constraints.

LAKEPORT, Calif. – Alethea Eason of Cobb will facilitate a workshop on Mary Magdalene in Carey Hall at St. John’s Episcopal Church on Saturday, July 21, from 10 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.

An overview of the program will include the Gospel references to Mary Magdalene as disciple and apostle, the conflation of her image as whore and penitent by Pope Gregory I in the sixth century, the Eastern tradition of Mary as hermit and penitent, and other legends and popular references.

“The workshop will be a creative experience, rather than a lecture,” said Eason.

She also will look at the apocryphal Gospel of Mary Magdalene, and popular author and lecturer Cynthia Bourgeault’s take on the role of Mary Magdalene.

A St. John’s parishioner and vestry member, Eason is a writer, teacher and freelance editor. She has taught in elementary schools in California and Chile for more than 20 years, as a third grade teacher and reading specialist.

The suggested donation for the day’s program is $10. Participants should bring a brown bag lunch. Coffee and refreshments will be provided. Mark your calendar now.

St. John’s Episcopal Church, www.saintjohnslakeport.org , is located at 1190 N. Forbes St. in Lakeport.

KELSEYVILLE, Calif. – “The Practices We Keep” is the title of the sermon this Sunday, July 1, at the Unitarian Universalist Community of Lake County.

The service starts at 11 a.m. at 3810 Main St. (First and Main) in Kelseyville.

Guests are encouraged to attend to learn more about the traditions of Unitarian Universalism.

The sermon will be presented by the Rev. Ben Meyers, minister of the Unitarian Universalist Church in Berkeley.

He will take a look at the sources, principles and practices of this denomination.

“Unitarian Universalism is based upon religious thought and spiritual actions that require a constancy of merger, fusion, adaptation and change to maintain its value and relevancy,” Meyers said. “How can such a paradox be maintained? What are some of the ways we embody these practices today? What practices will we need to adopt to move into the future?”

Unitarian Universalism is a liberal religion with Jewish-Christian roots. It has no creed. It affirms the worth of human beings, advocates freedom of belief and the search for advancing truth, and offers a warm, open, supportive community for people who believe that ethical living is the supreme witness of religion.
