LAKEPORT, Calif. – Alethea Eason of Cobb will facilitate a workshop on Mary Magdalene in Carey Hall at St. John’s Episcopal Church on Saturday, July 21, from 10 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.

An overview of the program will include the Gospel references to Mary Magdalene as disciple and apostle, the conflation of her image as whore and penitent by Pope Gregory I in the sixth century, the Eastern tradition of Mary as hermit and penitent, and other legends and popular references.

“The workshop will be a creative experience, rather than a lecture,” said Eason.

She also will look at the apocryphal Gospel of Mary Magdalene, and popular author and lecturer Cynthia Bourgeault’s take on the role of Mary Magdalene.

A St. John’s parishioner and vestry member, Eason is a writer, teacher and freelance editor. She has taught in elementary schools in California and Chile for more than 20 years, as a third grade teacher and reading specialist.

The suggested donation for the day’s program is $10. Participants should bring a brown bag lunch. Coffee and refreshments will be provided. Mark your calendar now.

St. John’s Episcopal Church, www.saintjohnslakeport.org , is located at 1190 N. Forbes St. in Lakeport.

KELSEYVILLE, Calif. – “The Practices We Keep” is the title of the sermon this Sunday, July 1, at the Unitarian Universalist Community of Lake County.

The service starts at 11 a.m. at 3810 Main St. (First and Main) in Kelseyville.

Guests are encouraged to attend to learn more about the traditions of Unitarian Universalism.

The sermon will be presented by the Rev. Ben Meyers, minister of the Unitarian Universalist Church in Berkeley.

He will take a look at the sources, principles and practices of this denomination.

“Unitarian Universalism is based upon religious thought and spiritual actions that require a constancy of merger, fusion, adaptation and change to maintain its value and relevancy,” Meyers said. “How can such a paradox be maintained? What are some of the ways we embody these practices today? What practices will we need to adopt to move into the future?”

Unitarian Universalism is a liberal religion with Jewish-Christian roots. It has no creed. It affirms the worth of human beings, advocates freedom of belief and the search for advancing truth, and offers a warm, open, supportive community for people who believe that ethical living is the supreme witness of religion.

His song "Bring Them Home" was sung at Mother Teresa's funeral service in Calcutta, India.

Kilpatrick speaks at churches and conferences around the world.

His first book, "Secrets of the Silence," was released in 2009 and his most recent book, "The Art of Being You," was published by Zondervan Books in 2010.

For nearly 15 years, Kilpatrick wrote a popular column for "Christian Musician" magazine. His writings also have appeared in www.worshiptogether.com , Youth Specialties, CCM, Relevant magazine and www.crosswalk.com .

Kilpatrick is an ordained minister and the third inductee into the Assemblies of God Hall of Honor. He is married to Cindy, his high school sweetheart. They have five children and live in Fair Oaks, Calif.

Kilpatrick is quoted as saying, "My desire is to serve the Church in any way that God allows. This was not a career choice for me, it was, and is, a calling. I am a servant. With God's grace, That's what I'll always be."

He also has said, "Every week in churches across America people tell me that this simple but life-changing message – God is an Artist, not a Mathematician, and you are his masterpiece, not his frustrating equation – frees them in a way nothing else has. Many have told me what one woman said: 'I have hobbled along for years wanting God to fix me when He was really wanting to form me.' "

Rev. Bryan Duffty welcomed as first-ever deacon at St. John’s Episcopal Church

LAKEPORT, Calif. – Lakeport resident Rev. Bryan Duffty is the first-ever deacon at St. John's Episcopal Church, Lakeport.

The appointment was made by Northern California Bishop Barry Beisner in Sacramento, and is a first for the 135-year history of the Episcopal Church in Lake County.

Of various ministries a deacon fulfills in a parish community, Rev. Duffty is particularly interested in working with teens and young people.

"It helps keep me young at heart and have a hopeful view of the future," he said.

He and his granddaughter, Makayla, are working with other young people to create a teen fashion boutique in St. John’s Basement Boutique Thrift Shop and put on a fashion show for the parish.

"I am here to serve not only the good folks of St. John's but also to be a bridge between the church and all the people of Lake County," he said.

Rev. Duffty was born in Leeds, an industrial city in Yorkshire, England, in 1937. He married Ann Russell in 1959, and in July 1964 the couple relocated to Ontario, Canada. Their daughter Joanne was born in 1967 and Jane in 1973.

He accepted a position as a forestry equipment driver in 1974 and the family moved to South San Jose and, five years later, to Gilroy.

In the early 1980s Rev. Duffty began studies for ordination to the diaconate and was in one of the first classes of perpetual deacons to be ordained since the revival of that order by the Episcopal Church.

He was ordained a perpetual deacon in 1985 by The Rt. Rev. Shannon Mallory, the first bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of El Camino Real, and served as deacon in several congregations of that diocese.

The Dufftys bought a summer home in Lakeport in the late 1980s and occasionally visited St. John's. Sadly Ann died in November 2007.

In July 2011 Rev. Duffty moved to Lakeport with his daughter Jane and Jane's daughter Makayla.

The family continued to worship on occasion at St. John's and when Rev. Duffty learned of the illness of parish priest Father Leo Joseph, he felt God's call to be of assistance to the parish in whatever way he could. Joseph was grateful for the offer and communicated that to Bishop Beisner by letter.

The parish officially welcomed Rev. Duffty at services June 10 and expressed thanks to God for the timely gift of his ministry.

When asked how he prefers to be addressed, whether as Deacon Bryan or as The Rev. Deacon Duffty, he replied, "Actually, I just as soon be called Bryan or anything, as long as you don't call me late for dinner."

All are welcome at St. John’s Episcopal Church Sunday services at 10 a.m., 1190 N. Forbes St., Lakeport. For more information, see www.saintjohnslakeport.org .
